Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said it is a matter of pride and honour for India to host Afghanistan's maiden Test match and paid tribute to the war-ravaged country's indomitable spirit.

Awarded full member status by the International Cricket Council (ICC) alongside Ireland previous year, Afghanistan became the 12th test-playing nation after first being recognised by the ICC in 2001. Though they will be playing their first global Test match, they could still have a meaningful impact on the result.

Afghanistan coach Phil Simmons' statement about "not knowing what it's all about till you get there" seemed prophetic as the talented bunch of cricketers got their introductory lessons in red ball cricket from two openers, who have played 85 Test matches between themselves.

On the other hand, Indian batsmen have played well against spinners. India and now Afghanistan are now two major Asian forces in cricket. "Not only are they competing in shorter formats but are also winning series", Karthik appreciated Afghanistan's team.

But the home side have to be a little conscious that they don't slip on a potential banana skin as they come into the game without any match practice.
