AP Analysis: Kim Jong Un got lots to brag about from summit

The joint statement signed by U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un stated: "The United States and the DPRK [Democratic People's Republic of Korea] commit to recovering POW/MIA remains, including the immediate repatriation of those already identified".

Trump and Kim signed a document on Tuesday stating that Pyongyang would work toward "complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula".

Kim's commitment to denuclearize was included in a document signed after the first ever meeting between a sitting US president and a North Korean leader. Denuclearization is rewarded by USA "security guarantees".

Meantime, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is also commenting - saying he supports Trump's efforts and looks forward to getting more details.

Trump's comments on Warmbier came after Vice President Mike Pence reassured the OH man's father when he spoke to him ahead of the Singapore summit.

The meeting is seen by North Korea as a way of bringing legitimacy to a nation long regarded as a pariah. "Lacking specifics - granted - of security for the North Korean regime", he continued.

On human rights, Trump said Tuesday's meetings only very briefly touched on the topic, but that the two sides would discuss it more in the future. The stroll was rehearsed for days, with White House staffers playing the roles of the two leaders before Trump and Kim did it for real, a White House official said.

Yesterday's summit was the first time a sitting USA president had met face-to-face with a North Korean leader.

"It's going great. We had a really fantastic meeting", Trump said after the lunch.

Speaking briefly, hours after the historic talks in Singapore, Abe also said he was pleased that the United States leader had raised the emotive issue of Japanese abducted by Pyongyang.

The working lunch was the final part of the summit between Trump and Kim. "The world will see a major change", he said.

This is not the first time Trump has made references to Kim's weight. He pointed to a "freeze for freeze" happening between the US and North Korea to illustrate the point. Some experts were particularly concerned by Trump's use of the words "war games" and "provocative", which echo North Korean statements and could suggest that Trump is uncritically accepting Kim's point of view.

Nearly as remarkable as the summit itself was the press conference that Trump gave later in the afternoon, after Kim had left, to the gathered global press corps at the Capella Hotel.

At the historic summit between the two leaders on Tuesday, Mr. Trump said he agreed to halt all joint US military exercises with South Korea and consider reducing USA forces there.
