Trump cites ‘special bond’ at summit with Kim Jong Un

For the record of history, never before has a U.S. President spoken this way of a dictator accused of crimes against his own people. Appearing in front of the media after the bilateral talks with North Korean leader, Donald Trump said that the meeting with Kim Jong-un was 'better than anybody could have expected.' As the two leaders met, Singapore navy vessels and air force Apache helicopters patrolled, while fighter jets and a Gulfstream 550 Airborne Early Warning aircraft circled.

Trump, who starred on NBC's reality show "The Apprentice" before entering politics, told reporters he was "not concerned at all" that the film could be used as propaganda, adding, "We could use that video for other countries".

"I share president Trump's assessment of that when he thanked the leaders of Japan and South Korea and China for the solidarity they've shown".

He also expressed a desire to remove all 28,500 American troops stationed in South Korea, a pillar of United States engagement in Asia since the Korean War ended in 1953.

CVID was among the biggest points of contention in pre-summit negotiations between Sung Kim, the United States ambassador to the Philippines and former envoy to South Korea, and North Korea's Vice-Foreign Minister Choe Son-hui.

Mr Kim also "reaffirmed his firm and unwavering commitment to complete denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula".

US President Donald Trump (R) and North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un shake hands following a signing ceremony during their historic US-North Korea summit, at the Capella Hotel on Sentosa island in Singapore on June 12, 2018.

Signatures of the two leaders on the summit document. At the end of a summit in April on the southern side of the Demilitarized Zone between the Koreas, Kim and South Korean President Moon Jae-in watched a highly produced video, backed by inspirational music, that highlighted the ceremonies they had just conducted during the day.

Trump's North Korean counterpart had also attended a meeting with PM Lee at the Istana yesterday for a half-hour session. It mentioned a plan for senior officials, led on the USA side by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, to keep talking.

In reality, the likelihood of war has diminished only slightly - let's say from very unlikely to very, very unlikely.

At the summit, Trump emphasized what North Korea has to gain by giving up its nuclear weapons and rejoining the worldwide community - a subject he returned to on Twitter.

"If I have to say I'm sitting on a stage with Chairman Kim and that's going to get us to save 30 million lives, could be more than that, I'm willing to sit on the stage". "Anybody that takes over a situation like he did at 26 years of age and is able to run it and run it tough".

In a post-summit interview with ABC News, the president said he was confident that the agreement meant full denuclearisation. It's going to start very quickly.

"I think Kim wanted to win the hearts [of people] and draw some sympathy for himself and his regime, as part of an effort to weaken resolve to maintain sanctions and pressure", Kovrig said.
