German Regulator Found Defeat Devices In Daimler Diesel Cars

German authorities have been cracking down on manufacturers since the Volkswagen Dieselgate scandal first besmirched the reputation of its domestically produced vehicles.

Since rival Volkswagen admitted in 2015 to cheating USA emissions tests, German carmakers including VW, Daimler and BMW have faced a backlash against diesel technology in which they have invested billions of euros.

The recall will involve updating the engine control software in Mercedes-Benz C-Class models, as well as its GLC crossover SUV (seen here) and Vito van, a model not sold in North America.

Following a second meeting between Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche and German Transport Minister Andreas Scheuer in Berlin on Monday, the government said it would issue an official order to make the carmaker withdraw a total of 238,000 cars in Germany alone.

For their part, German firms have announced dozens of new electric and hybrid models for the coming years in a bid to bring down emissions of both greenhouse gas Carbon dioxide - the original reason they turned to diesel - and of harmful NOx. For Mercedes-Benz, that means its cars switched off the emissions controls below nine degrees and above 26 degrees to guarantee its systems would survive over the vehicle's lifespan.

Germany's road vehicle authority KBA has found five "illegal switch-off devices" in Daimler auto engines, newspaper Bild am Sonntag (BamS) reported on Sunday. It's unclear exactly which models are being recalled, but the Vito 119 CDI, C 220 d and GLC 220 d have been identified, according to Autocar. Daimler hasn't contested the existence of the devices, but has argued that the devices may not be illegal.

Daimler has pledged to work on removing the software and to co-operate with authorities, the ministry said.

This week Dr Zetsche claimed Daimler had found a technical solution to update the software on the offending cars, which he hoped would help the company to avoid a fine.

'For the existence of the relevant test cycle NEDC, the specific programming in question is not required'.

Evercore ISI analyst Arndt Ellinghorst said the recall would not harm the company.

'Overall, this outcome should de-risk the stock'.
