ARCTIC BLAST: Trump SLAMS Canada’s Trudeau Over G7 Comments

White House trade adviser Peter Navarro apologised today for his sharp comments directed at Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau after last week's Group of Seven summit, according to the Wall Street Journal. "I own that. That was my mistake, my words".

"I have instructed our U.S. Reps not to endorse the Communique as we look at Tariffs on automobiles flooding the U.S. Market!", Trump tweeted Saturday evening while en route to Singapore aboard Air Force One.

Mr. Trump called Trudeau "very dishonest & weak" for his objections to the US tariffs.

European Council President Donald Tusk used Navarro's phrasing in a tweet backing Trudeau later Sunday. Canadians are "polite, we're reasonable, but we also will not be pushed around", Trudeau said.

MacLauchlan said he supported the Prime Minister's retaliatory tariffs in response to USA tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum and called on opposition parties to join him in expressing support for the federal government. But the president broadsided his allies after leaving the meeting by disavowing a joint statement the US had agreed to, criticizing Trudeau and vowing tariffs on automobiles.

White House legislative affairs director Marc Short also sought to distance himself from Navarro's comments and told CNN's John Berman in an interview Monday that "those are words that I would not have chosen".

Mr Trump said: "If they retaliate they are making a mistake".

"It's very unfair to our farmers, and it's very unfair to the people of our country", Trump said Tuesday in Singapore.

Mr Kudlow suggested Mr Trump saw Mr Trudeau as trying to weaken his hand before that meeting, saying the president will not "let a Canadian prime minister push him around ..."

Navarro "should have kept his big mouth shut because I don't think that helps us in foreign policy", said Senate Finance Chairman Orrin Hatch of Utah.

In reality, the United States has a small surplus with Canada when goods and services are considered - $341.2 billion to Canada's $325.9 billion, according to 2016 statistics from the US trade representative.

The president ruffled feathers at the G7 summit, not backing down from stiff tariffs on aluminum and steel imports.

Trudeau said the Liberal government looks forward to the details of the agreement that emerged from Monday's historic meeting between Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

"I have a good relationship with Justin Trudeau", Trump told the crowd.

"The president, coming late, stands before the cameras and says, "Why don't we add Russian Federation to the group".

International Trade Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne echoed that sentiment, saying, "We'll continue to do diplomacy the Canadian way, which is to be positive, to be constructive and to make sure we are firm to defend our industries and our workers". "We're the closest partners in the world, and you don't want to see a dispute over one particular issue poison everything".
