Singapore Offers to Pick up Kim Jong-un's Bills

Kim and President Trump arrived in Singapore on Sunday ahead of Tuesday's historic summit.

Rodman has no official role in the diplomatic efforts between his country and North Korea, but he appears to be invested in promoting positive ties between Washington and Pyongyang. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the delegations were "rapidly" making progress, but it will come down to the meeting between the two leaders.

The North Korean leader then traveled to the St. Regis Hotel - where he will be staying for the duration of the visit - in his armored limousine, which arrived on a separate flight.

What is unclear whether the summit will lead to any type of substantive outline of an agreement in which North Korea will halt its program and agree to denuclearize, and what kind of verification procedure it would accept.

Still, the sense of anticipation was great in Singapore, with people lining spotless streets holding cellphones high as Trump headed to meet Lee.

Various administration Twitter feeds posted footage of Trump departing his hotel and heading to the summit with Kim on Singapore's Sentosa Island. Previous reports had suggested Trump would leave on Wednesday.

Trump was hosted for a working lunch Monday by Singapore's prime minister, Lee Hsien Loong, at the Istana, which is the official residence of the city state's president.

The summit will be held at a hotel on Sentosa, a popular tourist island a few hundred metres off the Singapore mainland, at 09:00 local time (1pm NZT).

Trump initially touted the potential for a grand bargain with North Korea to rid itself of a nuclear missile program that has advanced rapidly to threaten the United States.

Pompeo told reporters the event should set the framework for "the hard work that will follow", insisting that North Korea had to move towards complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearisation.

Trump advisers cast his actions as a show of strength before the Kim meeting. North Korea admitted to enriching uranium in violation of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, which it subsequently withdrew from in 2003.
