Sebastian Vettel hits back at critics of 'boring' Canadian Grand Prix

Vettel certainly wasn't convinced that Red Bull had made the right call starting tomorrow's race on the hypers.

"I don't know, I haven't seen much of the times of the others so it's hard to read yet".

"It's like when a race is stopped and can't be restarted, you take it back prior to the lap where the red flag was given".

"I was quite happy with my first run in Q3 but I knew there was something more in the vehicle for the first part of the lap", Vettel continued.

"Fortunately we had radio, fortunately we had the lap counter in the vehicle, and the pit board was accurate", said Vettel.

"40 years after Gilles, it's great to show Ferrari is still alive and winning races", said Vettel.

The Mercedes of Valtteri Bottas will also start in the front row.

Verstappen also never came under pressure as he finished a second adrift of Bottas and a massive 12 seconds ahead of his team-mate Daniel Ricciardo, who vaulted Lewis Hamilton during the pit stops.

Ferrari F1 ace Sebastian Vettel on pole with record lap at Canadian Grand Prix

Lance Stroll of Montreal, the first Canadian to race in F1 since Jacques Villeneuve left in 2006, qualified 17th as his Williams team's struggles continued. Hamilton has won the Canadian race six times, including the previous three.

The semi-permanent track combines long straights with tight chicanes and each team sets up their vehicle to maximize straight line speed, although the cars also need to deliver a good ride over the relatively tall curbs.

Speaking about the incident, Stroll said: "I was side-by-side with Brendon going into Turn 5, the auto got loose on me and I corrected it, but there was not much room for both of us". Hamilton, who came into the weekend leading the championship standings, came in fifth. It was his second Canadian GP win after 2013, when he drove for Red Bull Renault. "No power, no gears", said the Spaniard. They'll say "next car", that sort of thing.

When it comes to the twisty stuff, 11 of the 14 corners are taken below 100 miles per hour, which makes it particularly hard on the brakes and tires when the cars are coming from the high-speed straights. "In the race, it all calms down a bit so that's why I think we're always a bit more competitive in the race".

Kimi Raikkonen in the other Ferrari and Monaco victor Daniel Ricciardo are in the third row.

Vettel sees another chance to honour the memory of Gilles Villeneuve, who died in a crash at the 1982 Belgian Grand Prix, with a Ferrari win.

It could have been nasty if fans jumped onto the track thinking it was over, or if a driver let up and got passed, but none did and Vettel wasn't fooled. "I was a lot happier with the vehicle and I think we can carry that into the race".

Canadian GP: Vettel cruises to win from Bottas, Verstappen
Red Bull's Max Verstappen snapped after he was repeatedly asked about the crashes he has been involved in recently. We still got everything out of the day we needed but we were compromised a bit for pace.
