Donald Trump accepts Singapore president's invitation for state visit in November

Mr Trump's first year in office was marked by bitter exchanges with Mr Kim as North Korea conducted several ballistic missile tests in defiance of global warnings.

Finally, on Monday morning, the Korean Central News Agency, or KCNA, reported Kim was in Singapore, had met with Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and would meet Trump on Tuesday.

"We're meeting with the chairman on June 12 and I think it's probably going to be a very successful - ultimately a successful process", Trump said.

In a tweet on Monday, he said: "Great to be in Singapore, excitement in the air!"

Trump and other top US officials have promised a "bright future" for the North if it quickly relinquishes its nuclear weapons - including economic inducements and a security agreement. A second marathon session is expected to begin in the afternoon. "It's never been done, it's never been tested", said Trump. "North Korea relationship, which can be attributed to their vision". The cost includes the hotel bill for the North Korean delegation. -North Korea meetings, including translators, photographers and logistical staff, asking how they can be sure they are not actually spies.

The historic meeting between the two leaders will take place at the island resort of Sentosa on Tuesday.

Lee complimented the bold and admirable decision by Kim and Trump to come together for the Summit.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's Twitter feed was busy during the first day of the summit, sharing photos of different meetings.

Trump on Sunday called the unprecedented summit, at which North Korea's nuclear arsenal will be at the top of the agenda, a "one-time shot" at peace.

In March, Trump surprised the world by accepting an invitation from Kim to meet in person. The North has faced crippling diplomatic and economic sanctions as it has advanced development of its nuclear and ballistic missile programs.

Observers in the region warn that ultimatums over denuclearization could make military confrontation between the USA and North Korea even more likely, a situation Zhao Hai from China's Academy of Social Sciences described as a "down-spiral of security" that could turn into a nuclear "nightmare".

As Trump was trying to build a bridge with Kim, he was smashing longtime alliances with Western allies, withdrawing from the G-7 joint communique, escalating a trade fight and launching blistering criticism against Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

While en route to Singapore, Trump said he looked forward to meeting Kim on what he anticipated would be an exciting day.

Since then, the path to the summit has been rocky, with Mr Trump at one point calling it off completely. And yet denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula, how to define it, what verification might look like, over what timescale it should unfold, in return for what level of USA economic aid and security guarantees and the lifting of what sanctions - and, and, and - is pretty head-scratching, complex stuff.

The president has sought to tamp down expectations for the summit, which had grown to include Nobel Peace Prize chatter.

The president who once described Kim as "Little Rocket Man" and threatened to destroy his country if it did not give up nukes, has not said what might happen if the summit goes the wrong way.

"Thank you very much", Trump said to reporters, as he turned to enter the banquet hall.
