Anthem release date confirmed, will not have loot boxes

Speaking to Game Informer, BioWare's Mark Darrah confirms that the game will only feature friendly co-op play when it comes to online shenanigans. Kicking things off today in sunny LA, EA brought its big names out in full force - and gave us a few surprises too. The World War II-based game is set for a release on 19 October, however, the premium edition will launch three days before on 16 October. It's a significant seismic shift, and it will be fascinating to see how it plays out across EA and the game industry at large. Hinting that players will be put in the shoes of a Sith, the game will be set while the Jedi are being hunted. You will be able to play solo, but things will be more hard that way since you'll have no back-up.

Not only this but more new modes are on the way, as well as content from the latest Han Solo movie. EA hasn't gone anywhere near the concept of stat-altering loot yet, but at least we know we'll be able to look rad.

EA also talked about Battlefield V at the conference, that game will have a destructible environment and a battle royale multiplayer mode. The new heroes including Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker, and General Grievous.

BioWare manager Casey Hudson confirmed the title won't have loot boxes or "ability to pay for power", but will feature microtransactions for customisable outfits for each mech suit, otherwise known as Javelins.

One of the indie titles that got time on stage is called Sea of Solitude and it's from a German studio called Jo-Mei Games and it will launch in early 2019. While the specifics of the gameplay have yet to be ironed out, it looks to be a sea-based game telling an emotional story about how loneliness can turn people into monsters. Anthem was delayed into 2019, allegedly due to development pressures. EA will, however, monetise the game through paid cosmetic modifications to Javelins, much like the skins in Fortnite.

She explained that community feedback on other BioWare IPs like Dragon Age and Mass Effect has driven them to write the story in such a way as to leave opportunities to expand the universe and the lore later down the road.
