Scientists find cheap way to convert Carbon dioxide into gasoline

"Until now, basically no one in the industry has published an open-book number that will give credibility that direct air capture costs less than the $500 to $1,000 per metric ton that has been estimated", Deich said.

What if we could directly capture Carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and turn that into fuel? These outcomes accelerate the shift to a "net zero" world that avoids the risks of climate change while affordably delivering clean energy. This was said by David Keith, who is the professor of applied physics and also the public policy at Havard University. The latest findings are based on three years of research from CE's pilot plant located on a 1.2-acre industrial site on the future site of the Oceanfront development on Squamish's central waterfront. "Direct air capture" that removes the gas from ambient air has possible since the 1940s, but - at a cost estimated in 2011 to be as much as $1,000 per metric ton of Carbon dioxide - it has always been viewed as too expensive to be practical.

Keith is also the founder of Carbon Engineering, a Calgary-based startup that has spent the last nine years designing, refining, and testing a direct air capture pilot plant in Squamish, British Columbia. "No prior research in the peer-reviewed literature provides a design and engineering cost for a complete DAC system- and this paper fills that gap".

Not only are the scientists sucking Carbon dioxide out of the air, but they are also commercializing a process which uses water electrolysis and fuels synthesis to produce clean liquid hydrocarbon fuels that are drop-in compatible with existing transportation infrastructure.

Professor Keith and his colleagues have implemented one of the first scalable and cost-effective working systems for direct air capture.

"CE's vision is to reduce the effects of climate change by first cutting emissions, then by reducing atmospheric CO₂". "Our clean fuel is fully compatible with existing engines, so it provides the transportation sector with a solution for significantly reducing emissions, either through blending or direct use".

"We've bought the smallest scalable unit of each piece of technology we have".

Vettel said. "I brushed the wall and lost some time getting ready for the second session". "But today we switched on". It's Vettel's fourth pole on the Ile Notre-Dame, and his first since 2013.

Carbon EngineeringRecycling the carbon dioxide emitted into the atmosphere by turning it back into fuel would help slow the process of global warming. This price represents a significant drop from current costs, which can run as high as $600 per ton.

Power plants and transportation are the biggest sources of greenhouse gas emissions blamed for climate change.

CE has developed and demonstrated the most cost-effective, scalable technology for removing Carbon dioxide directly from the atmosphere. After each step, the Carbon dioxide gets cleaner and the substance reacting with the Carbon dioxide is returned to where it belongs: the air contractor.

Long-distance transportation would welcome such fuel, suggested Keith.

The manuscript, called "A process for capturing Carbon dioxide from the atmosphere", was launched in Joule Journal on June 7th and is available to view in full here.

Carbon Engineering, a Canadian company funded by Bill Gates and Canada oil sands financier Norman Murray Edwards, revealed that is has developed a new technology in order to remove CO2 from the air, reaching a new and important threshold in this field.

"Taking CO2 out of carbonate solution is what nearly every paper mill in the world does", Keith told The Atlantic.
