Peel Street buzzing with excitement on eve of Canadian Grand Prix

It's Vettel's fourth pole on the Ile Notre-Dame, and his first since 2013.

The top four all lapped inside the one minute 11 seconds mark. "Of course our competitors have a bit of an advantage with the new engines, but I think it will be a close qualifying tomorrow". Vettel said. "I brushed the wall and lost some time getting ready for the second session".

"But today we switched on". I guess I woke up the right way.

Before the race on Sunday, the vehicle Villeneuve used in 1978 will be driven by his 47-year-old son Jacques, the 1997 world champion, to lead the ceremonial parade lap. On my final lap, I had a small mistake. "But it was fantastic".

Red Bull's Max Verstappen set the pace in all three practice sessions in Montreal, with Vettel struggling on Friday and saying he was unhappy with his car's handling.

The Dutchman's litany of misjudgments means that with less than a third of the season gone, he already trails championship leader Lewis Hamiton by 75 points.

"As hard as days like today are, there's no points today", Hamilton said.

Saturday was a very good continuation for Vettel, who is hoping to give the fans in red something much bigger to cheer about on Sunday.

"Obviously it's a bit frustrating to be at the tail end (of the top six), but I think honestly we what we had I really felt I didn't do a bad job".

Lewis Hamilton lost ground to his rivals in qualifying

Lewis Hamilton was fourth quickest on a circuit where he has tasted the victory Champagne on six different occasions, including the last three consecutive years.

"Our race pace was good yesterday".

"The auto balance has been good from the first run so it has just been a case of small balance tuning to keep the vehicle in the right window as the track grip came up".

"It was close between us but Ferrari did a better job than us today and that's the way it is".

Mercedes asked for so few hyper-softs because they believe it will be a poor race tyre but Red Bull proved at the last race in Monaco that they can run it longer and more competitively than other teams and Verstappen is confident he can challenge the Ferraris and Mercedes in the race.

"I think when we look back on this weekend we will accept the fact that, yeah, in hindsight, it would have been nice if we had more time to prepare on the hyper-soft, but it wasn't the case", he told reporters.

On a dry and sunlit day, there was immediate drama when Frenchman Romain Grosjean pulled up in the pit-lane with clouds of smoke billowing from his Haas car's Ferrari engine.

Lance Stroll of Montreal, the first Canadian to race in F1 since Jacques Villeneuve left in 2006, qualified 17th as his Williams team's struggles continued.
