ICC acquits DR Congo's Bemba on appeal

Global war crimes judges Friday acquitted former Congolese vice president Jean-Pierre Bemba on appeal, overturning an 18-year sentence for war crimes committed in the Central African Republic (CAR).

As reminds the edition, of Jean-Pierre Bemba was charged that the rebel group under his leadership made a series of brutal murders and mass rapes during the campaign in support of the then President of the Central African Republic, Mr. ange-félix Patassé in 2002-2003.

Bemba led the MLC party in the Democratic Republic of Congo and later became one of the country's four vice presidents in 2003 as part of a transitional government.

But the ICC has overturned his 2016 conviction by upholding his appeal against that ruling. Bemba's efforts to stop the crimes "extinguished his responsibility in full".

But what exactly was Bemba accused of? Bemba's supporters in the packed public gallery were not so reserved; they cheered, whistled and hugged one another for so long that Van den Wyngaert threatened to halt proceedings if order was not restored.

"The carnage and suffering caused by those crimes are very real and they are recognized", she told journalists.

The sentence for witness tampering, however, is not likely to exceed the time already served by Mr. Bemba.

Amnesty International called the acquittal "a blow" to the victims.

The 'trend' that is troubling the US
Bourdain are now among the approximately 45,000 suicides each year in the United States. The increases range from six percent in DE to 58 percent in North Dakota.

"For these courageous individuals, as well as thousands of other victims in vehicle, the pursuit of truth, justice and reparations will continue".

Karine Bonneau of the International Federation for Human Rights slammed Friday's decision.

Bemba was the highest ranking politician convicted by the permanent war crimes court, and his case had been seen as establishing a precedent that political and military officials may be held liable for the actions of troops under their command.

The trial was the first before the ICC to focus on sexual violence as a weapon of war.

The court in The Hague also declared that it will now "urgently" supervise another case against Bemba for offenses to the administration of justice in which he was convicted, for which he is still in jail.

It remains unclear whether Bemba intends to return to the country after his release.

Kabila was supposed to give up the presidency at the end of 2016 but he has clung to power, repeatedly putting off elections.
