Canadian GP: Vettel cruises to win from Bottas, Verstappen

"I'm really exhausted of all the comments about me - that I should change my approach", he said.

"I think if I get a few more I'll head-butt someone", he said, only slowly allowing a faint grin.

Not only was it Ferrari's first pole in Canada since 2001, this weekend's race marks the 40th anniversary of the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal - with the inaugural race being won by Ferrari legend and the driver the circuit is named after, Gilles Villeneuve. At the restart, Vettel had no trouble keeping Bottas and the hypersoft-tyred Verstappen at bay and promptly proceeded to pull out a gap.

It's Vettel's fourth pole on the Ile Notre-Dame, and his first since 2013.

Red Bull's Max Verstappen snapped after he was repeatedly asked about the crashes he has been involved in recently. You can see there are a lot of flags.

Mercedes' Valtteri Bottas finished in second, making it his fourth podium here in a row while Red Bull's Max Verstappen makes his first podium in Canada in P3. He has a 14-point lead over Vettel and a 38-point edge on Ricciardo.

It was clearly a strategic scrap as the teams were aiming to use the tyres in Q2 that would suit them best to start the race.

"It was a good race", he enthused. We still got everything out of the day we needed but we were compromised a bit for pace.

Netanyahu meets European resistance to Iran nuclear stance
Mr Netanyahu blamed Assad directly for allowing Iranian troops to become entrenched within Syria and in turn threaten Israel. President Trump announced the U.S would withdrew from the Iran Nuclear Accord just last month.

That was enough to put him 29 thousandths of a second ahead of Brendon Hartley's Toro Rosso, which is running the upgraded Honda engine package.

"We knew that, in general, we're lacking power, so we just try to compensate with that", said Verstappen. "Kimi I think was happier on one lap so probably he's one of the favourites, I'm not, but we'll see tomorrow".

Once the main teams emerged, Vettel was soon quickest for Ferrari before swapping fastest laps with Raikkonen as the Mercedes men struggled to keep pace.

"With the long straights it's hard to fight for pole position".

"In the race, it all calms down a bit, which is why in general we are always a bit more competitive". "But as I said at the start, I am exhausted of these questions and if I get any more I am going to head-butt someone".

When asked if he felt Red Bull had the pace for pole after seeing teammate Daniel Ricciardo go quickest in Q2, he said: "I knew we had a good vehicle, but I wanted to wait and see how competitive we would be in Q3".

The Finn said: "That was close, very close".
