Trump pulls invitation to National Football League champions Eagles over anthem

On Monday Night, President Trump appeared to rescind the Philadelphia Eagles' invitation to the White House.

Last year, the New England Patriots attended a ceremony at the White House. But late Friday, the team tried to reschedule, proposing a time when Trump would be overseas.

But the Eagles said only a "tiny handful" of representatives would show up and that the great majority of players would not attend, Sanders said. But the 1,000 or so who came to the event were a suspicious group of football fans: nearly all in business suits and only a few wearing Eagles paraphernalia.

Trump previously stated that he agreed with the NFL's decision but, amid the backlash to the announcement over the Eagles' canceled visit, he said: "Staying in the Locker Room for the playing of our National Anthem is as disrespectful to our country as kneeling", in a tweet on Tuesday.

The mayor was referring to deferments Trump obtained during the Vietnam War for his college education and for bone spurs in his heels.

The event will be replaced by a "celebration of the American flag" for Eagles fans with musical performances by the United States Marine Band and the United States Army Chorus.

"Honoring America! NFL, no escaping to Locker Rooms!" he wrote.

The playing of the national anthem was followed by brief remarks from Trump, who spoke for about three minutes about the importance of standing for the national anthem. Mr. Trump also called on NFL team owners to fire players who did not stand for the national anthem.

The White House has accused the Philadelphia Eagles of "abandoning their fans" in a statement about the cancellation of the team's visit with President Donald Trump due to the small number of players who planned to attend.
