Suicide has become the 10th leading cause of death in the US, and is one of three leading causes that are on the rise, the CDC said.

While the CDC report notes that guns are the most common method for these suicides - accounting for about half of all cases - it fails to underscore the extent to which these alarming rates may be attributable to the country's utter saturation with civilian firearms.

Suicide is a major public health issue, accounting for almost 45,000 deaths in 2016 alone.

"Suicidologists regularly state that suicide is not caused by a single factor; however, suicide prevention is often oriented toward mental health conditions alone with regard to downstream identification of suicidal persons, treatment of mental health conditions, and prevention of reattempts", researchers wrote.

Approximately half of those who committed suicide did not have a known mental health condition.

Schuchat said the data analyzed revealed a number of factors leading up to death by suicide, including economic woes, relationship issues, substance misuse, physical health problems and others.

The high proportion of older people who are white and low rates of religiosity in New Hampshire may also play a role, she said. However, the fact that so many other factors appeared to contribute to suicide is an important finding.

"Any life stressors that are weighing on someone who has a history of or is now struggling with their mental health - that's a person who you have to be anxious about", said psychiatrist Catherine Birndorf. "We don't think we can just leave this to the mental health system to manage".

Thomas Delaney, a faculty member at the University of Vermont's Larner College of Medicine who studies suicide, said Thursday that several aspects of Vermont life have been linked to higher rates of suicide.

Muhammad Ali: President Trump mulls draft dodging pardon
Trump said he is considering "thousands" of pardon applications, including heavyweight boxer Muhammad Ali , who died in 2016. Ali's legal fight ended in 1971, when the Supreme Court ruled in his favor, reversing his conviction on a technicality.

"Those are the times to really support each other", Schuchat said.

John Madigan, vice president of public policy for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, said the rising suicide rate is a complex phenomenon and that it is hard to pinpoint a reason despite all of the resources available. Her husband said in a statement on Wednesday that she had suffered from depression and anxiety for many years. The U.S. average rate went up to 15.4 from 12.3 in the same periods.

Suicide rates varied from 6.9 per 100,000 residents a year in the District of Columbia to 29.2 per 100,000 in Montana.

Twenty-five states had suicide rates that increased more than 30 percent, and the highest increase was seen in North Dakota at 57.6 percent. The rate increase in Missouri was 36.4 percent.

Only Nevada saw a decline, and that was just one percent.

Suicide prevention strategiesThe report calls on state and local communities, health care providers, and individuals to take steps to prevent suicide.

"Teaching coping skills and problem solving skills and providing access to services can help with those challenges", says the CDC's Dr. Anne Schuchat. It's important to do not forget to remove access to firearms, medications, or any other potential tools they might use to harm themsevles.

If you or someone you know may be considering suicide, call the 24-hour National Suicide Prevention Lifeline to talk anonymously with a counselor: 800-273-TALK (8255).
