Apgar's work on the health of babies also saw her become the first woman to be a professor at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1949. The Apgar score was developed by her in the year 1952 in order to quantify the effects of obstetric anesthesia on babies.

The Apgar score is a method used to measure how healthy a baby is immediately after it is born.

Apgar was encouraged to study anesthesiology and became interested in the field of obstetrical anesthesia where she would make her greatest contributions.

On June 7th, 2018, google doodle honored Apgar with a colorful image of her writing on a pad and a picture of a baby next to her. She was discouraged from practising surgery as a career, her University chose her male colleague to head the department even though she was seniormost, and she had to fight for equal pay. This research led to the invention of what is known as the Apgar score, according to Wikipedia. Apgar first came up with the Apgar Score in 1952, and it has been used in almost every hospital birth ever since.

The test can be performed by a doctor, midwife, or nurse to examine the baby's breathing effort, heart rate, muscle tone, reflexes and skin colour.

As an anesthesiologist, she attended close to 20,000 births.

This score is generally done within one and five minutes after birth, so this is really the first test most of you were given. Post leaving Columbia in the late 1950s, she devoted her life to the prevention of birth defects as a director at the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis (now the March of Dimes). The test is still being widely used in assessing a newborn's health in hospitals throughout the US. "A Guide to Birth Defects", written with Joan Beck.

Apgar Score looks at five factors, and doctors remember them by spelling out her last name - Appearance, Pulse, Grimace, Activity, and Respiration.

Virginia, who never married, died of cirrhosis of the liver on August 7, 1974, at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center.

She was extraordinary during her academic career and held three honorary doctorates - Honorary doctorate, Women's Medical College of Pennsylvania (1964); Honorary doctorate, Mount Holyoke College (1965); and Honorary doctorate, New Jersey College of Medicine and Dentistry (1967).
