Tributes were paid to her on an Instagram video her brother Martin posted previous year of his "very attractive and talented little sister" singing and playing the guitar.

Her relatives quickly arrived on the scene and it's believed Queen Maxima will travel to her homeland in the coming hours, according to Hello! magazine.

The King of the Netherlands, Willem-Alexander, and Queen Maxima are flying to Argentina for the funeral. As well as serving as a bridesmaid at her sister's royal wedding, the 33-year-old was the godmother of Queen Maxima's youngest daughter, 11-year-old Princess Ariane.

Police said she died of an apparent suicide, state news agency Telam reported.

Investigating prosecutors in Argentina said that Zorreguieta was found dead on Wednesday evening by her mother and a friend, who called 911.

"With our hearts and our thoughts we are with the queen and her family".

Ms Zorreguieta reportedly suffered from depression and mental health problems. I wish them all the strength necessary to carry this disgusting loss together.

Zorreguieta was a psychologist who worked on social policies at the office of Argentina's president, Mauricio Macri. She had also worked for the social development ministry in Buenos Aires province and at a United Nations office in Panama.

Her death comes 10 months after the death of Maxima's father Jorge Zorreguieta, who died at the age of 89 from cancer. She has since canceled her forthcoming engagements including a state visit to Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania next week.

Queen Maxima is the wife of King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands, who ascended to the throne in 2013.
