Heartbreaker? Smoking causing millions of heart attacks, strokes

'Measures that reduce the risks to heart health posed by tobacco include making all indoor public and workplaces completely smoke-free and promoting use of tobacco package warnings that demonstrate the health risks of tobacco'.

Tobacco use has been linked to more than seven million deaths worldwide each year, including some 890,000 from breathing in second-hand smoke.

In the African Region, it said about 146 000 adults aged 30 years and above die every year from tobacco-related diseases.

In 2015, Vietnamese smokers spent 31 trillion VND (1.36 billion USD) on tobacco, while total treatment expenses for smoking-related diseases exceeded 23 trillion VND (1.01 billion USD). People and communities can also contribute to creating a tobacco-free Sierra Leone and commit to never take up or stop using tobacco products.

The Free Market Foundation (FMF) released a statement yesterday which opposes the stricter proposed smoking laws, saying that these laws violates the freedom of choice of adults who smoke.
