Florida braces for heavy storm this week as hurricane season returns

The National Hurricane Center has issued a Tropical Storm Watch for parts of four states, including Southeast Louisiana and New Orleans.

This Memorial Day weekend, anyone seeking nice weather should avoid South Florida and the Gulf Coast. Flooding in those areas is expected. Alberto comes ahead of schedule: the six-month hurricane season doesnt begin until June 1.

Gov. Rick Scott's office put out a warning Thursday, noting that "this storm is expected to bring torrential rain and significant flooding in communities across Florida", with the worst weather likeliest over the Gulf Coast and Panhandle.

"However, environmental conditions are then forecast to become more conducive for development, and a subtropical or tropical depression could form this weekend over the eastern or central Gulf of Mexico".

STORM SURGE: The combination of storm surge and the tide will cause normally dry areas near the coast to be flooded by rising waters moving inland from the shoreline.

The system sits east of the Yucatan Peninsula but moving northward. In the last 50 years, the hurricane center seasonal averages are 11 named storms; 6 hurricanes, and 2 major hurricanes - those with peak winds of at least 111 miles per hour.

An Air Force Reserve aircraft was expected to further investigate the weather pattern Friday, according to the South Florida Sun Sentinel.

Tropical storm watches are in effect for Tulum to Cabo Catoche, Mexico, and the Cuban province of Pinar del Rio.

Northwest Florida emergency management officials say some areas could see up to a foot of rain from late Saturday into Tuesday, and widespread flooding is to be expected.

Although the east side of the storm isn't expected to reach Broward, Miami-Dade or Palm Beach counties, the storm's outer bands are expected to bring the area heavy rain, gusts of up to 35 miles per hour, strong rip currents and the possibility of tornadoes, according to a 3 p.m. briefing by the National Weather Service in Miami.

Make sure you've got Live Alert 19 if you're traveling to the coast this weekend for the latest advisories, radar imagery, and any severe weather alerts if they're issued. Additionally, as the wind field strengthens and expands around the system, our winds will increase and there is a threat of some thunderstorm wind damage with sporadic power outages especially Saturday night and Sunday.

LeBron James not concerned about NBA Finals streak being in jeopardy
He got little help from his teammates, who combined to shoot 38.5 percent from the field and 28.6 percent from three-point range. They can punch their ticket to the finals with a win in Cleveland (something they haven't done this series ) on Friday night.
