What is YouTube Music? YouTube's new music streaming service explained

YouTube Music is the music streaming side of the equation.

Making YouTube Premium more of a destination for video than music would also allow YouTube to judge how its originals are really performing, like Cobra Kai, which has a 100% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes but alone isn't really reason to sign up if you're not already on the service.

The home screen, whether you're using the app or the web player, is always changing.

How do I get YouTube Music? The app is a subsidiary of YouTube app for music and music videos.

That blitz will include prominent spots on YouTube's website, timed around popular music videos and events.

"While users can enjoy the new ad-supported version of "YouTube Music" for free, we're also launching 'YouTube Music Premium, ' a paid membership that gives you background listening, downloads and an ad-free experience for $9.99 a month", the post added. Existing Google Play Music users will get YouTube Music included with their current plans, similar to how they now get YouTube Red.

As part of the shift, YouTube is overhauling the existing YouTube Music app, which is now available free with ads or ad-free with a YouTube Red subscription. To say the least, the largest online music streaming service, Spotify has got a direct competition from YouTube Music.

Google is retiring both its Play Music and YouTube Red brands for something new.

YouTube Music is the new music streaming service in the market. The company hasn't shared its number of paid subscribers. Lyor Cohen, head of YouTube Music, said the company spent the previous year rebuilding ties with record labels and artists.

In an interview at Recode's Code Media conference, YouTube chief executive Susan Wojcicki offered clues as to why the company chose to split its premium content and rebrand its premium service.

Simultaneously, the company will pour more content to the Originals. The YouTube Red will be available at a price of $11.99 per month for the new users. This means they will get access to YouTube Premium in $9.99 (for the US).

Oh, and speaking of YouTube Red: it's gone now.

This new streaming service will initially only be launched in the US, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico and South Korea before being rolled out in 14 additional countries, including the UK.

YouTube never reveals just how many people use YouTube Music or YouTube Red, but its services have largely operated behind the dominance of Spotify, which boasts 75 million paying users, and Apple Music, which is steadily catching Spotify's pace in terms of growth.
