But people with close links to the political prisoners held there said the uprising had started after Gregory Sanabria was beaten up, allegedly by a non-political prisoner.

Joshua Holt, a United States citizen held at the jail for two years pending trial, pleaded for help in a video message sent as the uprising was apparently going on.

Political prisoners have always been complaining about the conditions they are held in and pressure groups inside Venezuela as well as overseas have called on the government of President Nicolás Maduro to free them but so far this has had little impact.

Holt was arrested after traveling to Venezuela in the summer of 2016 to marry a woman, a Venezuelan native, who he had met on a dating website. "The Venezuelan government is directly responsible for their security and we will hold them responsible if anything happens to them", the embassy tweeted in Spanish. The only people who are kidnapping me is the government of Venezuela. I am a political prisoner and they won't let me free. "I need your help to get me out of this place", Holt said in a video posted to the "Justice For Josh" Facebook group. They are outside. They are trying to break in.

They say they did so after a political prisoner was beaten. Embattled head of state Nicolas Maduro, running for a second six-year period, is expected to win, having the banned the Opposition party and candidates and running against hand-picked candidates, amidst repression, vast censorship and widespread vote-buying, with the government conditioning sales of subsidized food and the adjudication of several bonuses to pro-Maduro votes on Sunday. "They're saying they want me as their guarantee".

While he did not provide details about the disturbance, or what sparked it, he said the delegates offered to coordinate with prison and judicial authorities to address the inmates' demands.

Tensions between the USA and Venezuela have risen as President Donald Trump's administration considers further sanctions on the country, this time on oil. Holt denies the charges.

On social media, men identifying themselves as inmates said the detention centre, 'has been taken over peacefully by all the political prisoners and all the prisoners who are abducted here, who are tortured daily'.

In a video seen on Twitter late on Wednesday Holt said, "I'm here to show you that I am not being kidnapped".

"Please my fellow Americans don't allow me to continue suffering in Venezuela", Mr Holt said in a written message, also posted on his Facebook page.

Todd Robinson, the chargé d'affaires at the USA embassy, went to the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry for information, the embassy added but there was, 'no response from the government'.
