US Officer Shoots Student Who Opens Fire at School

Dixon, Ill., is about 100 miles west of Chicago.

New details are emerging over the potentially deadly school shooting in Dixon, Illinois Wednesday, with local police confirming the school officer "charged towards the suspect" after he opened fire near the gymnasium.

The suspect was transported for medical treatment for non-life threatening injuries, authorities said. The suspect is being treated at KSB Hospital. On the other hand, Dallas then fired back and hit and injured Milby. Anxious parents were directed to a nearby baseball field where they could pick up their kids.

The training that staff and students at Dixon High School had done to prepare for an active shooter incident paid off.

"We're lucky the officer was there", said City Administrator Danny Langloss, the father of a student who was in the gym.

Both likely saved lives by their quick actions.

"We are extremely grateful that all of the students and staff at Dixon High School will be able to return to their homes unharmed today", FOP Labor Council Executive Director Shawn Roselieb said in a statement. "Sounds like firecrackers, and then there's dead silence".

Another student Devin Scott, age 18, said that their gym teacher Andrew McKay came running into the gym where many students were hiding and shouted at everybody to get out immediately. Shaw says, "everyone was sprinting in all different directions".

Milby, 19, was reportedly recently expelled from the school, although it was unclear why, according to Sauk Valley Media. Howell declined to discuss why Milby brought a gun to the school. The website was the first to name Milby as the suspect. So this was a surprise. I'm glad he's alive.

Students at Dixon High School are a bit shaken up after what unfolded during their graduation practice Wednesday morning.

But, what he heard was in fact the real deal when a former student fired several rounds at a school resource officer.

Matt was taken into custody after he was shot in the shoulder. Dixon Police Department created the resource officer position in 2000 to help prevent this type of occurrence.

Dallas was placed on administrative leave as per protocol, police confirmed. The shooting is being investigated by the Illinois State Police and the ATF. Dallas chased him when he ran outside, trying to shoot a police officer. Here are five things to know about SRO Mark Dallas, who took down the gunman and saved lives. Because there were two heroes, and because Dixon School District 170 and law enforcement were prepared to respond, no one died in this school shooting. There are 41 teachers employed at the school. The school is perhaps most famous for being Ronald Reagan's alma-mater.
