Florida teacher accused of drowning raccoons with students

A video of the shocking incident shot by a student who was upset about it has gone viral on social media.

Speaking with ABC affiliate WFTV, the student, who did not wish to be named, said he was crying and angry after the sixth period agricultural science class on Monday.

"My friend said that the class before that, they were [putting] the water in the buckets", the student said, adding that some of her classmates had nightmares following the ordeal.

At least two of the animals were killed, with each taking several minutes to drown. The raccoons did not drown easily, the student said.

"My son stood in the background, hid his phone and watched as they filled these trash cans full of water, and held these raccoons down in trash cans in the cages", the parent told the station.

"My son joined ag science, because he loves animals not to torture them", a parent told Fox 35, which was also provided the video but called it "too disturbing" to share. Pictures and video recorded by a student show a raccoon in a metal wire trap, which the teacher and students then lifted into a garbage bin while they filled the bin with water from several hoses.

'It made me sick, ' the mother, who asked to remain anonymous, told WKMG. It made me sick to my stomach. "It's awful. It still does make me sick to my stomach", the woman said.

One said Brewton is one of the greatest people he knows. Students and staff raise chickens, and other animals that are located in the shed behind the school.

In March, a junior high biology teacher in Idaho reportedly fed a puppy to a snapping turtle in front of students. Christian said he couldn't comment further on the incident, only saying that Brewton was placed on leave as part of standard protocol, and that school officials did not have issues with Brewton in the past 34 years he has worked on and off for the district. "While law enforcement tells us the teacher did not do anything illegal, his actions before students are certainly questionable", a rep for the school district said.

The incident is also being investigated by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the Florida Department of Health.

The FFWCC included that its officers take these matters very seriously and are working hard to "determine the legality of what occurred".
