Durham man dies on rugby tour in Sri Lanka

The pair were on tour alongside 20 other players after arriving in Sri Lanka last Thursday.

Thomas Reed, 27 years old had died on May 15 while being treated at the intensive care unit of a private hospital in Colombo.

Thomas Howard and Thomas Baty, of Durham, were taken ill after returning from a nightclub and they were rushed to hospital in the early hours of Sunday morning.

"We also extend our best wishes to Paul, Alyson and Charlotte who are in Sri Lanka supporting Tom Baty as he takes on the challenge of his recovery".

In a statement released on Tuesday, the club requested that the privacy of their families would be 'respected and upheld at this hard time'.

A group of rugby players went out to a nightclub on Saturday night, according to police.

Per the original report, the Scottsdale Police stated, "The suspects were intoxicated and leaving the WMPO". Here is what a Cardinals spokesperson told NFL.com: "We were aware of this incident prior to the draft".

British media were giving the story heavy coverage, with The Times reporting on Tuesday that "local police said that they were investigating links to "narcotics and liquor".

Durham RFC has asked the privacy of the players' families be "respected and upheld at this hard time".

The club previously said that in both cases the breathing problems were non-rugby related. Both players were members of the Durham-based Clem's Pirates rugby team who were due to play a series of matches in the capital throughout May.

Mr Howard's post-mortem examination did not reveal any existing injury or illness that might have caused his death.

The two players are said to have complained of breathing difficulties at around 10am.

Samples from the autopsy have been sent for further analysis, the BBC reports.
