Plan to Eliminate Industrially-Produced Trans-Fatty Acids from Global Food Supply

In the recent history of popular nutrition, trans fat has experienced perhaps the most meteoric rise and precipitous fall from grace of anything in our foods. There's not a good way to remove trans fats from natural foods, but food policy experts agree there's no place for artificially made trans fats in human diets. Carbohydrates, sugar, salt, and saturated fats have all gotten a bad rap at some point, but none of them have become true villains in food-not like trans fat has.

The WHO estimates that trans fat leads to the deaths of more than 500,000 people from heart disease each year. For food oil manufacturers like Archer Daniels Midland Co., Bunge Ltd. and Cargill Inc., the challenge has been replacing partially hydrogenated oils without altering the taste, texture and consistency that diners expect.

Next month, June 18, 2018, marks the deadline set by FDA three years earlier for manufacturers to stop selling trans fatty foods.

Trans fats occur in small amounts in nature.

"Several high-income countries have virtually eliminated industrially-produced trans fats through legally imposed limits on the amount that can be contained in packaged food", World Health Organization said. The recommendations of the REPLACE program include promoting the replacement of hydrogenated oils and vegetable fats with healthier alternatives, monitoring trans fats in food supplies, and create awareness regarding the adverse side effects of consuming trans fats.
