White House condemns Iran rocket attacks against Israel

Israel's military says Iranian forces based in neighboring Syria fired about 20 projectiles at Israeli positions in the Golan Heights.

Israel had opened its bomb shelters in the Golan on Tuesday night, fearing retaliation for an alleged Israeli airstrike on Syria's T-4 air base, which is believed to be home to an advanced Iranian air-defense system, and over the Trump administration's decision to pull out of the Iran nuclear deal.

Mr Lieberman told the Herzliya Conference, an annual security gathering north of Tel Aviv, that "if it rains on us it will be a flood on them".

Syria's state-run SANA news agency reported Israeli airstrikes hitting air defense positions, radar stations and an ammunition depot while saying anti-aircraft systems were able to shoot down dozens of Israeli missiles.

The Israeli military said it hit a logistics headquarters in Kiswah belonging to the Quds Force, an Iranian military logistics compound, and the group's munition storage warehouses at Damascus International Airport.

President Donald Trump's announcement Tuesday that the US would withdraw from the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran has triggered uncertainty and threatened to spark more unrest in the Middle East.

"Get rid of the Iranians and maybe it will be possible to have a different kind of life", Lieberman added.

Thursday's exchange followed a suspected Israeli rocket strike in Syria on Tuesday on a military base in Kisweh, hours after Trump's announcement on the nuclear deal.

France urged Iran on Thursday to refrain from all "military provocation" and cautioned it against "all temptations for regional hegemony". If confirmed, it would be the first time Iran has directly fired on Israel after years of fighting proxy wars.
