Trump to meet Kim Jong Un in Singapore for summit

"We would like to express our deep appreciation to the United States government, President Trump, Secretary Pompeo, and the people of the United States for bringing us home", the trio said.

South Koreans Are Still Buzzing Over Last Month's Inter-Korean Summit The mood in South Korea after the meeting between leaders of the two Koreas is optimistic and euphoric.

-North Korea summit to be held in Singapore on June 12, in response to a request by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

Pompeo - who recently returned from another set of meetings with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un - said the benefits North Korea can gain by scrapping its nuclear ambitions should be obvious.

"A strategic change in the director for his country and his people, and if he's prepared to do that, President Trump is prepared to assure that this can be a successful transition", he said.

When asked by ABC's Jonathan Karl why he thought Kim Jong-un chose to free the prisoners now, Trump replied: "I think he did this because I really think he wants to do something and bring that country into the real world". Kim has said that North Korea now has the capability to strike the continental United States.

North Korea has invited the outside world to witness the dismantling of its nuclear facilities before.

"We're not talking about sanctions relief at this point", Kang said.

Iran leaders on diplomatic push to salvage nuke deal, demand European Union guarantees
While the remaining JCPOA parties are scrambling to save the deal, Israel has played a second fiddle to the United States bid to wreck it.

Last year, North Korea released American Otto Warmbier, a university student who was detained at the Pyongyang airport in January 2016 while on a five-day tour of North Korea.

"I think that we have a shared vision for what we hope".

The Trump administration insists it will maintain its campaign of "maximum pressure" on the North until Kim has shown "substantial dismantlement" of his nuclear arsenal.

"There's a danger here of the peace track moving more quickly than the denuclearization track", warned Abraham Denmark, an Asia expert and former senior USA defense official.

Journalists asked Pompeo what such a denuclearization would look like and if it meant carrying out inspections in North Korean nuclear plants.

Kang said South Korea wanted the sanctions to stay in place until Pyongyang takes "visible, meaningful action" to get rid of its nuclear weapons.

Amid concerns that North Korea will demand the US withdraw its troops from neighbouring South Korea, Ms Kang emphasised that the US military presence there must be "a matter for the US-ROK alliance first and foremost", using an acronym for South Korea's official name, the Republic of Korea.

In North Korea's bombastic rhetoric, "denuclearization" has, for years, been a byword for USA troop withdrawals from South Korea.
