Apple now faces a class action lawsuit over failing MacBook Pro keyboards

A class action lawsuit has been filed against Apple in a federal court in California for allegedly using a flawed keyboard design in its MacBook variants since 2015 and deciding to go ahead with the design despite knowing being aware of the flaw.

In 2015, Apple introduced the "butterfly" keyboard for the MacBook that replaced the traditional "scissor" mechanism below each key in an effort to be more stable, responsive and comfortable.

Apple has faced some pointed criticism over the butterfly switch keyboards on the 12-inch MacBook and current-generation MacBook Pro.

According to the lawsuit, "Apple knew that the MacBook is defective at or before the time it began selling the affected models to the public". The suit also demands reimbursement to the users who have purchased the replacement keyboards on the defected laptops.

Apple did not respond to the complaint, according to CNET.

That petition - which cites among others the highly regarded writer and UI designer John Gruber, who has called the keyboard "one of the biggest design screwups in Apple history" - is gaining steam again today, presumably fueled by this new lawsuit.

The lawsuit is calling for "appropriate injunctive and declaratory relief", including demanding Apple provide adequate disclosure of the defective nature of the MacBooks and pay plaintiffs' costs to remedy replacing defective MacBook laptops. Many users complained that the mechanism got stuck, making the keys unusable. However, the fix could take a week or more, which would leave the user without a laptop for that time. In several cases, the failure of the keyboard to register keystrokes forced a lot of users to take their laptops in for servicing, which is a very expensive undertaking when out of warranty. It represents 2015 or later MacBook and 2016 or later MacBook Pro owners, and claims they are "defective" and prone to collecting dust and debris around the key mechanisms. Apple also released support documents detailing a method of cleaning the keyboard with a can of compressed air, which users claimed to be quite ineffective.

"Every one of Apple's current-gen MacBook Pro models, 13" and 15", is sold with a keyboard that can become defective at any moment due to a design failure", the consumers wrote on the petition.
