2 dead in knife attack in Paris, France

The Paris Public Prosecutor's Office opened a criminal investigation, Gaudin said.

The incident happened at about 9 p.m. local time on Saturday when a man attacked passersby on a street in the 2nd arrondissement in central Paris.

Witnesses said the attacker ran toward police yelling "kill me or I'll kill you".

No motive for the attack has yet been provided by authorities, according to CNN affiliate BFM-TV.

Police added that of the four others injured in the rampage, two are suffering serious injuries.

Paris police said the attacker died.

Police have not yet revealed the suspect's identity.

The alleged assailant was shot by the police and was pronounced dead. His motive is now unclear.

Interior Minister Gerard Collomb denounced the "odious attack" in a tweet.
