Onslow County schools closing Wednesday for teacher rally

In response to the high numbers of teachers requesting personal leave that day, 27 school districts across the state - includ- ing Granville, Orange and Durham counties - have chose to close their schools and designate that Wednesday as an optional teacher workday, as they struggled to find adequate substitutes to fill the expected teacher absences. "Our school district anticipates mass teacher absences on that day", the school system announced Tuesday in closing school for students and making it an optional teacher workday, a schedule readjustment that will make June 11 the last day of school for students.

PCS says this information was presented to the Board of Education for consideration of calendar adjustment.

Students will not have to make up the missed day in both New Hanover and Brunswick County public schools.

At least one Republican state representative does not agree with classes being canceled so that thousands of North Carolina teachers can attend a rally in Raleigh. "I think they need more tools to do what they need to do". However, he said he feels appreciated every day he comes to school, and shared an experience from earlier this week as an example.

"Right now, the number of [Person County] teachers requesting leave did not exceed the number of subs available", said PCS Superintendent Rodney Peterson. "When we began monitoring, we thought we were going to be in the clear". "I always tell people that it's not about the "D" or the 'R, ' it's about the 'E, '" he said. In Bladen County, as of press time, school is still in session.

"I support the teachers and their request for higher salaries", he said.
