Wetherspoon pub chain calls time on social media presence

JD Wetherspoon has announced that it will close down its Twitter, Instagram and Facebook pages, following "bad publicity surrounding social media".

The Twitter, Instagram and Facebook accounts for all 900 pubs and head office are shutting down with immediate effect.

Martin said he had become increasingly concerned about the use of social media to criticise MPs and other public figures, especially those from religious or ethnic minorities.

In any case, the online landscape is unlikely to feel particularly bereft by the absence of Wetherspoon's social media presence, says the Independent.

Martin said he did not believe that closing those accounts would affect its business whatsoever "and this is the overwhelming view of our pub managers".

"We are going against conventional wisdom that these platforms are a vital component of a successful business", Martin said in a statement emailed to Mashable.

The impact might well be minimal.

After the revelation that 87m Facebook accounts were affected by the Cambridge Analytica data breach, the social network colossus admitted that data harvesters had scraped personal profile information on most of its 2bn users. It means a fracas in one pub that is posted on social media can not undermine the whole company's image. Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, deleted both companies' Facebook accounts after a challenge on Twitter.

"I didn't realize there was one", Musk replied casually.

Last year, Wetherspoon was forced to issue a denial after a spoof Twitter account falsely claimed the company was not allowing staff to wear poppies at work to commemorate fallen service men and women. "Also, we don't advertise or pay for endorsements, so ... don't care".
