Ulster players release statement on Paddy Jackson and Stuart Olding departure

A former Ulster and Irish worldwide has called on rugby authorities to explain why they sacked Paddy Jackson and Stuart Olding.

Where to next for Jackson and Olding was discussed on this week's The Hard Yards rugby show, a JOE podcast.

Jackson and Stuart Olding had their Ulster and IRFU contracts revoked on Saturday after an internal review while Ulster winger Craig Gilroy has been dropped from first team consideration until the end of April.

Former Ulster and Ireland rugby player and RugbyPass columnist Neil Best tweeted in response to a video of the interview, saying: "Occupy yourself in beholding and bewailing your own imperfections rather than contemplating the imperfections of others".

So where next for the two Ulster men I think your guess is as good as mine.

Ulster head Shane Logan also rejected criticism that the two players had been effectively hung out to dry by their club and country.

However, there was a public backlash over a series of sexually explicit WhatsApp messages involving the players and friends that emerged during the case.

"

"They have made a very serious mistake."

".

He insisted money did not drive the decision to sack the players.

Sacked rugby players won't return to team - Ulster rugby chief

Asked if he expected Ireland to ever pick them again, he said: "The position is joint".

"I hope that they will learn from that and I hope they fulfil their potential going forward".

Mr Wallace said Mr Jackson and Mr Olding "will be able to start again and rebuild their careers" and could come back to Ulster's Kingspan stadium "in another jersey on some European night".

Jackson and Olding were unanimously acquitted of raping the same woman in June 2016, while Jackson was also found not guilty of sexual assault.

"We have taken on board everybody's views right across society, right across our supporter group, our sponsor group, our players, clubs, volunteers, we are part of society".

"In arriving at this decision, the Irish Rugby Football Union and Ulster Rugby acknowledge our responsibility and commitment to the core values of the game: Respect, Inclusivity and Integrity".

"No sponsor including Bank of Ireland drove the decision", he told the Press Association.

"Each of them, and fair play to them for recognising it, were clear their behaviours had fallen far short of what was expected of them as role models".
