Trump tells Russian Federation to get ready for USA missile strike on Syria

US President Donald Trump holds Russian Federation and Syria responsible for a suspected chemical attack that killed more than 40 people, the White House said yesterday, refusing to rule out direct military engagement with Russian Federation.

In his televised address from the White House on Friday evening, Mr Trump said the U.S. was prepared to sustain economic, diplomatic and military pressure on Mr Assad until the Syrian leader ends what the USA president called a criminal pattern of killing his own people with internationally banned chemical weapons.

The comments appear to row back on President Donald Trump's earlier warning to Russian Federation that it should "get ready" for missile strikes in Syria.

In his tweet on Wednesday, Trump referred to Assad as a "gas killing animal".

Russia on Wednesday warned against the risk of a direct clash with the U.S.in Syria, with a Russian envoy saying USA missiles flying over the war-ravaged country would be shot down.

Satellites and other USA intelligence aircraft are watching closely for signs that Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad, as well as Russian units - are using the advance notice to move aircraft, weapons and personnel out of the way of a potential attack.

Statements from Washington have been militaristic, and threats by the United States and France were a violation of the U.N. charter, ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said.

"This is posturing. This action has no sense at all, save the one: to show that Trump is a strong president, that he remains the leader of a free world".

British Prime Minister Theresa May said in London that the West had tried "every possible" diplomatic means to stop Assad from using chemical weapons.

"It's a disgraceful situation", Trump told reporters before a meeting of military officials at the White House on Monday night.

Should the President follow through on his warnings of an attack, two US Navy destroyers armed with Tomahawk cruise missiles are in position and ready to be called into action, among other assets including jets and submarines.

Some lawmakers, meanwhile, are warning the administration that military action in Syria would require congressional authorization, though House Speaker Paul Ryan downplayed those concerns during a news conference.

Haley said the three USA goals for accomplishing its mission are making sure chemical weapons are not used in a way that could harm US national interests, defeating the Islamic State group and having a good vantage point to watch what Iran is doing. Another US ally, Germany, said on Thursday they would not participate in military action in Syria.

"Russia vows to shoot down any and all missiles fired at Syria", Trump tweeted Wednesday.

Sources had indicated earlier in the day that the council would meet Thursday afternoon to make decisions regarding Syria.

A team from the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) is due to deploy to Syria "shortly" to determine whether banned weapons were used in Douma.

Assad has denied his regime was responsible for the attack in Douma and Russian Federation has claimed the incident was fabricated by rebels.

Mattis said he personally believes Syria is guilty of an "inexcusable" use of chemical weapons, while noting that the worldwide fact-finding team would likely fall short of determining who was responsible. He criticized the USA and its allies for launching the strike without waiting for worldwide inspectors to complete their visit to the area.

Finally, what is broader US strategy in Syria?

US President Donald Trump welcomes the Emir of Qatar Sheikh Hamad Khalifa Al-Thani (not pictured) at the White House in Washington, April 10, 2018.

The French president, who said he was in daily contact with President Trump, said any strikes would go after Syria's "chemical capabilities".

The Department stressed that the US leader has not yet made a final decision on further action in Syria. The only objective of this action is to accuse the Syrian authorities as well as Russian Federation of committing this crime and use it as a pretext for armed intervention against legitimate Syrian government.

At the same time Mrs May is under pressure to give Parliament the chance to vote before committing United Kingdom forces to any new action in Syria, amid fears it could draw the West into direct conflict with Assad's main backer, Russia.
