Large rally in Damascus supporting Assad's army

Igor Kirillov, head of Russia's radiological, biological and chemical protection unit, told reporters the roads still had to be de-mined and cleared and would be tested by United Nations security services on Tuesday.

"A perfectly executed strike", President Donald Trump tweeted Saturday in the aftermath of his second decision in just over a year to attack Syria.

The draft text "condemns the aggression against the Syrian Arab Republic by the U.S. and its allies in violation of global law and the UN Charter".

By August 2014, the chemical weapons previously turned over by Syria had been destroyed. Such devastation could break the will of rebel fighters and turn civilians in the area against the rebels.

The US and its allies fired more than 100 missiles at Syria on Saturday in what the Pentagon called a "one-time shot" after President Bashar al-Assad was reportedly responsible for a chemical weapons attack on Douma using at least chlorine gas. For now, it doesn't appear that Russian Federation is heeding the call by U.S. State Department Press Secretary Heather Nauert who said that Russian Federation "needs to take responsibility".

Lt. Gen. Kenneth McKenzie, the director of the Joint Staff at the Pentagon, also says there also is no indication that Russian air defense systems were employed early Saturday in Syria.

The lack of access to Douma has left unanswered questions about the attack.

As the diplomatic fallout of Saturday's airstrikes continued, the United Kingdom on Monday accused Russian Federation and Syria of blocking experts from the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) from accessing Douma, the site of the suspected gas attack.

In Germany, the president warned against a "dangerous alienation" from Russian Federation, as tensions grow between the country and the West.

Defense Secretary James Mattis said Friday night that the United States was expecting a disinformation campaign by those aligned with the Assad regime.

Syrian opposition and activists have criticised the Russian Federation deployment in the town, saying that evidence of chemical weapons' use might no longer be found.

He told the BBC the strikes in Syria were meant to signal that "enough is enough" and their "primary goal is to say no to the use of barbaric chemical weapons". "There's still a residual element of the Syrian program that's out there", McKenzie said. Under the agreement, it was agreed that the estimate was "1,000 tons of chemical weapons, including the blister agent, Sulphur mustard, and sarin nerve agent".

Damascus skies erupt with surface to air missile fire as the US launches an attack on Syria targeting different parts of the Syrian capital Damascus, Syria, early on April 14, 2018.

Russian President Vladimir Putin warned of global "chaos" on Sunday in a phone conversation with Iran's president as the two men discussed the USA -led strike on Syria.

After the attack, Assad backers flooded the streets in Damascus in a demonstration of support to the country's armed forces.

"I see desperation. I see cynicism", he said.

Trump faced criticism for using the term Saturday on social media, with critics noting that it echoed former President George W. Bush's declaration shortly after the USA invasion of Iraq in May 2003, and that the Iraq War continued for eight years.

Russian Federation and Iran called the use of force a "military crime" and "act of aggression". "They'll try and stay below the red line", Koblentz said.

Haley warned that the United States was "locked and loaded" if any new chemical attack was carried out in Syria.

Jens Stoltenberg said the strikes were a "clear message" to Syrian president Bashar Assad, to Russian Federation and Iran that the use of chemical weapons is not acceptable and that the allies would not stand by and watch.

"Assad likely concluded that the cost of American airstrikes was lower than what he would have paid in Douma", Cafarella said.

Assad's government has denied ever using toxic chemicals in the course of its seven-year civil war, although previous OPCW missions have detected toxic substances.

The OPCW has recorded more than 390 allegations of chemical weapons use in Syria since its investigation began in 2014, Wilson said.

However, speaking on Saturday morning, UK Prime Minister Theresa May said she was "confident" the strikes had been successful.
