Cathy Yan to Direct Harley Quinn Spinoff Starring Margot Robbie

According to Deadline, Yan was chosen as the director over numerous "well-established male filmmakers".

Dead Pigs won the World Cinema Dramatic Award For Ensemble Acting at Sundance last January and Robbie was keen to bag a female director for Birds Of Prey. Despite being a new talent, Yan's presentation for Birds of Prey was exceptional, and Robbie held firm to her desire for this film to be directed by a woman. Robbie and Unkeless produced I, Tonya.

DC Comics' Birds of Prey are an worldwide crimefighting team featuring heroines such as Oracle (Barbara Gordon), Black Canary (Dinah Laurel Lance) and the Huntress (Helena Bertinelli). It's not confirmed if all these characters will make it to the final cut of the film. The news comes just weeks after Warner Bros. and DC tapped director Ava DuVernay to adapt The New Gods. The script was written by Christina Hodson, who wrote the Transformers spinoff Bumblebee, and just got hired to write the Batgirl movie. She is still negotiating to star with Leo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

What to Know About the US-Led Missile Strikes on Syria
The Russian military said last week its officers in Douma found no evidence to support reports of a gas attack. Assad's recent attack and today's response are the direct result of Russia's failure to keep that promise.

There are a lot of Harley Quinn-centric films in development, as Robbie herself has said. That's all very encouraging, especially to those of us who could've maybe done with 75% less gratuitous Harley Quinn ass-shots in Suicide Squad.

Admittedly, it's been somewhat hard keeping track of the happenings over at Warner Bros.' DCU: you've got movies that are part of the established Snyder-verse (Aquaman, the next Wonder Woman), movies that aren't a part of that mythology (the forthcoming Joker movie from Todd Phillips), and a few projects whose ties to the greater DCU remain unclear (the long-gestating Gotham City Sirens movie, for instance).

In that film, a mysterious stream of pig carcasses floats silently toward China's populous economic hub, Shanghai.
