Trump takes advantage of Syria to pressure Russia: MP

"We're witnessing very risky developments in Syria", he said, adding United States policies are becoming a "threat to peace in the region and beyond".

Western powers are thought to be preparing for strikes but Russian Federation, a Syrian ally, opposes such action.

In a brief statement on the Kremlin's website, Mr Putin demanded an emergency meeting of the United Nations security council to discuss "the aggressive actions of the USA and its allies". "They were very bellicose".

Syrian TV said three civilians were wounded in one of the USA -led strikes on a military base in Homs, although the attack was aborted by derailing the incoming missile. Prime-time talk shows on Russian state TV featured senior lawmakers and military experts engaging in heated discussions of possible scenarios of a clash between Russia and the US, all the way to an all-out nuclear war.

U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres told the Security Council Friday that "there is no military solution to the conflict".

In a statement on Thursday, a watchdog representative said: "The Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) confirms that the OPCW Fact-Finding Mission (FFM) team is on its way to Syria and will start its work as of Saturday 14 April 2018".

What is the West planning?

Trump warned Russian Federation on Wednesday of imminent military action in Syria over a suspected poison gas attack, declaring that missiles "will be coming" and lambasting Moscow for standing by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

During his address, President Trump said USA forces were prepared to sustain this response "until the Syrian regime stops its use of prohibited chemical agents" and issued a direct message to Russian Federation and Iran which he said are "most responsible for supporting, equipping, and financing the criminal Assad regime".

But the Violations Documentation Center (VDC), which records alleged violations of worldwide law in Syria, said bodies were found with oral foaming, cyanosis, and corneal burns.

A senior French official noted that President Emmanuel Macron did not tell Putin about the strikes when they spoke on the phone Friday, but "certain de-confliction mechanisms" had already been triggered by that point, and "both knew that a new phase was going to begin quickly".

Western officials believe chlorine was used in Saturday's attack on Douma, the main city in the longtime rebel bastion of Eastern Ghouta, where the British government now estimates 75 people were killed.

The Western states put the blame of the attack on Damascus, while the Syrian forces firmly denied the claims. His generals pushed back, not wanting to escalate tensions with those two countries, the officials said.

In the United Kingdom, cabinet ministers agreed that it was "highly likely" the Assad regime was responsible for the alleged attack and said the use of chemical weapons must not "go unchallenged".

"None of the cruise missiles launched by the United States and its allies entered the zones of Russian air defenses around Tartus and Hmeymin", the ministry said in a statement.

There have been calls from opposition parties and some Conservative MPs for Parliament to have a vote beforehand.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that "the action against Syria came precisely at the moment when the country received a chance for a peaceful future".

Moscow is estimated to have dozens of aircraft at its Hmeymim air base in Syria including fighters and bombers, as well as 10 to 15 warships and support vessels in the Mediterranean. "It will just take more lives and spawn the war elsewhere".

President Vladimir Putin later referred to this claim, saying on April 4 that Russian Federation had "irrefutable proof" that rebels were planning an attack with "poisonous substances".

Faced with the threat of a USA strike on Syria, Russian President Vladimir Putin has a dilemma: allow US missiles to hit Moscow's ally without a response or risk a military clash with the United States.

Speaking from the White House late Friday, US President Donald Trump said the three nations had "marshalled their righteous power against barbarism and brutality". Those words contained the rather provocative suggestion that Russian Federation would fire on US warships and airplanes. But the next morning, Trump tweeted that he "never said when an attack on Syria would take place".

Mrs May said "every possible diplomatic channel" had been considered before authorising the attack, saying that it was not a decision she had taken lightly.

Others added: "I am afraid that while Russian Federation will not attack North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, it certainly will attack allies of US, UK, and France that are not part of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation".

Russian Federation has requested a United Nations meeting in NY later in the day, but this has not yet been confirmed.
