Shelley wins gold after Hawkins collapses in men's marathon

Scotland's Hawkins who had injected some enormous pace to go it alone from the five kilometer mark started wobbling off the road at around 38km and collapsed at one point before picking himself up to try and battle for gold.

Namibia's Hellalia Johannes winning the Marathon gold at the Commonwealth Games in a time of 2:32:40NAIROBI, Kenya, Apr 15- Kenya's national anthem won't sound on the final day of the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia as the country's athletes missed out on medals in the final event of the athletics calendar, the men's and women's marathon.

Eventual victor Shelley had slowed to 5:48 miling over the final 2km as he clocked 2:16:46 - the second slowest time for victory since 1966.

Hawkins had moved away from the pack and opened up a gap from Uganda's Munyo Solomon Mutai, who was initially behind him in second.

The temperature was 27 degrees at the end of the race, with a total of seven runners from a field of 24 failing to finish.

There was no immediate word on his condition.

After placing fourth at world championships, Hawkins, 25, was aiming for a medal at Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games and Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, his biography said.

According to a report, an official informed the spectators to leave Hawkins unattended.

The issue was further conflicted by the rules of the race which would have seen Hawkins disqualified if he received any assistance.

Thankfully medical staff eventually reached Hawkins after a short delay, and he was taken to hospital.

It was too little too late for many commentators.

Thomas Abercrombie scored 26 points to lead New Zealand to a 79-69 win over Scotland to take the bronze medal.

Channel 7's Bruce McAvaney had said he looked "disorientated" just a few seconds before the runner stopped and bent over with his hands on his knees.

"We need to check the facts out...obviously the health of the athlete is absolute prime", he said.

The smashes that were landing outside in the opening game became just the bit accurate and hard for the Indian to retrieve. Lee was on his brilliant best at the start of the game and scored four points in succession with masterful strokes.

"That should never happen", she said.

"I think now is the time".

Australia went into the final day of competition with an overwhelming lead in the medal race, both gold and overall.

In 1954, the Games marathon saw one of the most famous collapses in history, by Jim Peters of England.

"He will have family at home who can see this".

"He is on autopilot".

"He has gotten back into, not a rhythm, he is still wobbling everywhere, the mind is working so hard but the legs are just getting along". You can not just wait at the finish line. He needs some help.

"Somebody now should come and help him".

It took several minutes for medical staff to attend to Hawkins, even though it was clear he could not continue.

Team Scotland also tweeted Hawkins was receiving medical treatment.

"A lot of concern about the Scotsman Callum Hawkins", Welsh said.

"What we're seeing is hard to watch". Hawkins had about a two-minute lead over Shelley but became disoriented in the humid conditions. I had a couple of mates around Main Beach who said Callum was in a bit of trouble. They told me to keep going and gave me encouragement. "I'm sorry if you're watching this at home, it's really distressing", Cram said. I'm glad to be finished to be honest. "I got the sponges every two kilometres, made sure I got my drinks and tried to push on the best I could".

In the women's race, Jerotich seemed to have taken control of the race at the 32km mark when she bolted upfront, but just three kilometers later, she ran out of gas.
