President Donald Trump declared, "Mission Accomplished!" on Saturday after the US and its allies hit at least three chemical and biological weapons facilities in Syria with more than 120 missiles in a coordinated pre-dawn attack.

For a second time, President Donald Trump ordered a limited military strike to punish Syria for using chemical weapons against civilians, and to deter further atrocities. We hit the sites, the heart of the chemical weapons program.

Mr. Nebenzia heaped scorn on a claim made Friday by the United States defense secretary, Jim Mattis, that the United States Constitution gave the president the right to take military action to defend "vital national interests".

Faysal Itani, a scholar at the Atlantic Council, said that even if the USA -led strikes prevented new chemical attacks, it would not change Assad's larger strategy or halt his conventional assaults on rebel-held areas.

The U.S., United Kingdom and France sought to shore up global support on Saturday after overnight strikes on Bashar al-Assad's regime as punishment for an apparent chemical weapons attack, and as deterrence against future attacks.

"A perfectly executed strike last night", Mr. Trump said.

There were no immediate reports of casualties. What happens next, she said, is up to Assad and to his Russian and Iranian allies.

Donald Trump said the US-led strikes were carried out in response to chemical weapons attacks in Douma.

"They didn't reach their targets", Bashar Ja'afari said.

The US, Britain, and France say they launched airstrikes against Syrian chemical sites after obtaining "proof" that poisonous gas was used last weekend in Douma and in which at least 40 people, including children, were killed. They only seek to send a message and would not stop Assad. French President Emmanuel Macron said in a statement that a target of the strike was the Syrian government's "clandestine chemical arsenal".

North Atlantic Treaty Organisation also expressed "full support" for the strikes.

Nikki Haley Confronts UN After Syria Bombing: US Is 'Locked and Loaded'
The objective of our actions tonight is to establish a strong deterrent against the production, spread and use of chemical weapons.

Assad's Barzah research and development center in Damascus was destroyed, McKenzie said.

Although officials said the singular target was Assad's chemical weapons capability, his air force, including helicopters he allegedly has used to drop chemical weapons on civilians, were spared.

The comments come a day after the United States launched targeted airstrikes against suspected chemical weapons facilities in Syria in coordination with the British and French. The Western states put the blame of the attack on Damascus, while the Syrian forces firmly denied the claims.

The vote reflected the deep divisions in the UN's most powerful body, which has been paralyzed in dealing with the seven-year Syrian conflict and chemical weapons use in the country. Moscow condemned the Western states for refusing to wait for their findings. Russian Federation and Syria call the attack fabricated.

The council failed on Tuesday to approve three draft resolutions on chemical weapons attacks in Syria.

"We have absorbed the strike", the official told Reuters.

The Western countries were at pains to avoid further escalation, including any unexpected conflict with their superpower rival Russian Federation.

In a telephone conversation with his Syrian counterpart Ali Abdullah Ayyoub, the Iranian defense minister said the criminal act by Washington, Paris and London was a breach of worldwide law and human principles. The question now is, will the Russians tell him to? Luckily there are no substantial losses or damages.

Assad is going to keep testing the West. The administration continues to insist, as White said Saturday, the main mission is to defeat the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) and not further intervene in the Syrian civil war. That effectively ends all resistance in the suburbs of Damascus known as eastern Ghouta, marking one of the biggest victories for Assad's government of the entire war. Both countries have troops on the ground in support of Mr Al Assad, and the Russians have provided him heavy air and artillery support, something the United States has declined to do for the rebels fighting him.

Russian Federation in November used its veto three times to bury a previous UN-led inquiry which found that Syrian forces had used sarin in the attack on Khan Sheikhun in April past year.

His generals pushed back, not wanting to escalate tensions with those two countries, the officials said. That strike had effectively no impact on the war.
