READ: UK Prime Minister Theresa May's statement on Syria strikes

Britain's Prime Minister Theresa May gives a press conference at Downing Street in central London on April 14, 2018, following British military action against Syria.

Four Royal Air Force Tornado GR4s took part in the assault, launching Storm Shadow missiles at a military facility fifteen miles west of Homs, where the ministry of defense claimed the regime kept chemical weapon precursors stockpiled.

"It is not about regime change", May said in a statement. It is about a limited and targeted strike that does not further escalate tensions in the region and that does everything possible to prevent civilian casualties.

Theresa May declined to say whether Syrian President Bashar al-Assad should stay in power and said talks with allies would continue on finding a political solution to the civil war.

Mrs May said earlier Wednesday that the government was still assessing who was responsible for the attack on Douma.

The UK, United States and France launched "precision strikes" in Syria overnight.

So there is no practicable alternative to the use of force to degrade and deter the use of chemical weapons by the Syrian Regime.

Secretary-General António Guterres has also expressed his outrage at reports that civilians in the enclave are being targeted by toxic agents, saying that any confirmed use of chemical weapons, by any party to the conflict, "is abhorrent and a clear violation of worldwide law".

President Macron insisted France play a key role in the attacks, after Syria crossed the "red line" he set out in May previous year by using chemical weaponry again.

"The facility which was struck is located some distance from any known concentrations of civilian habitation, reducing yet further any such risk", the MoD said in a statement. "Let these united actions send a clear message to the regime - the use of chemical weapons is categorically unacceptable and you will be held to account". Britain has accused Russia of being behind last month's nerve agent attack on former Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter in Salisbury, southern England, a charge Moscow has rejected.

BBC quoted unnamed sources as saying that the prime minister is prepared to take action against the Syrian government without first seeking Parliamentary consent.

Yesterday President Trump appeared to roll back somewhat on his threat for a military strike against Syria, tweeting that action could be taken "very soon or not so soon at all".

'This persistent pattern of behaviour must be stopped - not just to protect innocent people in Syria from the horrific deaths and casualties caused by chemical weapons but also because we can not allow the erosion of the worldwide norm that prevents the use of these weapons.

Mrs May is not legally required to get parliament's backing for military action, though it is conventional for lawmakers to be given the chance to vote.

Some lawmakers have expressed reservations about taking military action now, but others have come to believe the 2013 vote was a mistake.

And a significant body of information including intelligence indicates the Syrian Regime is responsible for this latest attack.

"I think it is important that those who sit around that [U.N.] Security Council table take seriously the responsibility they have to the wider global community for decisions which are taken", she said, in a clear reference to Russia's repeated blocking of U.N. investigations into chemical weapons use in Syria.

"No other group could have carried this attack", May said.

"Bombing can not substitute for diplomacy", he said.
