Najib hails 'great' Chong Wei for 'amazing win'

Indian star Kidambi Srikanth had to remain satisfied with the silver medal after losing to an inspired Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia in the men's singles badminton final at the 21st Commonwealth Games (CWG) here on Sunday. Kidambi Srikanth was touted as the heavy favourite to win the match before it commenced, and he cemented his credentials in the first set but Lee Chong Wei roared back and subjugated the Indian completely.

Lee, who had most of the crowd on his side, now boasts a trophy haul that includes three Olympic silver medals and three Commonwealth singles golds.

Nehwal, 28, a poster girl of Indian sport, saw off her rival 21-18, 23-21 and said the gold was up there with her London 2012 Olympic bronze and her number one world ranking in 2015. The smashes that were landing outside in the opening game became just the bit accurate and hard for the Indian to retrieve.

Lee was on his brilliant best at the start of the game and scored four points in succession with masterful strokes.

Seamus Coleman found Yannick Bolasie unmarked, but Lukasz Fabianski was equal to the winger's drive as well as Gueye's follow-up effort.

Lee eventually gathered pace and made it all square at 19-19, but that was it for the Malaysian in the first game as Kidambi clinched the round 21-19. The Malaysian Open has now been postponed to June 26 - July 1 due to ongoing Commonwealth Games. He took 11-9 and 19-14 leads before taking the match into a decider. Lee continued to plunder points as will before closing off the game by a comfortable margin to seal the title. Trying as he might, Srikanth did everything to launch a comeback, but such was Lee's brilliance that he was restricted to 14 points.

Srikanth took lead once again at 19-17 and although Lee drew level with back to back winners, the Indian took three consecutive points to win the first game. Lee was simply all over the court and had answers to everything Srikanth threw at him.

In one week I played him two times in the final.

Elated with his performance, Srikanth, on April 12 tweeted, "Absolutely thrilled to be ranked world no 1".
