Trump fires Tillerson, appoints Pompeo as US Secretary of State

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson was ousted Tuesday after months of strained relations with President Donald Trump, who sometimes used tweets to disparage the former Exxon Mobil CEO's efforts at global diplomacy.

US stock index futures pared their gains and the dollar also trimmed gains versus the yen while extending losses versus the euro amid the news.

CIA Deputy Director Gina Haspel will replace Pompeo as the head of the CIA.

Trump chose Pompeo's current deputy, Gina Haspel, to be the next director of the Central Intelligence Agency, touting Haspel as the first woman to fill this role. He will do a fantastic job!

Trump also thanked Tillerson, saying "A great deal has been accomplished over the last fourteen months, and I wish him and his family well", according to the Washington Post.

Mr. Trump made Tuesday's move while Mr. Tillerson, formerly the CEO of ExxonMobil, was out of the country, finishing a week-long tour of several African nations.

Rex Tillerson is out as secretary of state. And Tillerson once allegedly called Trump a "moron", a charge he never denied.
