President Trump fires Rex Tillerson as Secretary of State

President Donald Trump has ousted Rex Tillerson as secretary of state, tweeting in a surprise Tuesday morning announcement that Mr Tillerson will be replaced by Central Intelligence Agency director Mike Pompeo.

Much like his quick choice to take the meeting with Kim Jong-Un, Trump made a decision to remove Tillerson from his Cabinet post by himself, according to the AP.

"We got along actually quite well, but we disagreed on things", said the president. "When you look at the Iran deal, I thought it was awful, he thought it was okay". "So we were not thinking the same", Trump said.

"I had a very good conversation with Director Pompeo this morning and look forward to meeting with him soon", Corker said in a statement.

While Tillerson has been critical of Russia's interference in the 2016 presidential campaign and its intervention from Ukraine to Syria, Pompeo has at times bolstered Trump's view that inquiries into Russian election meddling is a "witch hunt" meant to undercut his presidency.

Pompeo, however, will need to find a way to grapple with a boss who has shown little regard for diplomacy and no qualms about undermining Tillerson with Twitter posts, current and former USA officials said.

The reshuffle comes at a time of intense turnover within Trump's administration that has alarmed those both in and out of the White House. The now-former Cabinet member cut his trip to Africa short and returned to D.C. on Monday. The sensitive diplomacy would be the first face-to-face meeting between the leaders of the USA and North Korea, which claims to have missiles capable of striking anywhere in the mainland U.S.

He appeared out of the loop last week when Mr Trump announced he would meet with Mr Kim.

Trump fires Tillerson, appoints Pompeo as US Secretary of State
Tillerson, formerly the CEO of ExxonMobil, was out of the country, finishing a week-long tour of several African nations. And Tillerson once allegedly called Trump a "moron", a charge he never denied .

Rucker and Parker broke the news of Tillerson's firing on Tuesday. S&P futures were last up 0.3 percent.

The shake-up does not necessarily validate every detail of every report about Tillerson, but it does strike another blow to the credibility of Trump's "fake news" battle cry. He will do a fantastic job! Thank you to Rex Tillerson for his service!

'Gina, by the way, who I know very well, who I've worked very closely with, will be the first woman director of the CIA, ' Trump said. "Tremendous energy, tremendous intellect", Trump said of Pompeo.

Tillerson joined a long list of senior officials who have either resigned or been fired since Trump took office in January 2017.

Tillerson's departure marks the latest in a flood of turnover in Trump's inner circle, including the exits of national security advisor Mike Flynn, strategist Steve Bannon, chief of staff Reince Priebus, top economic advisor Gary Cohn, Secretary of Health and Human Services Tom Price, and White House communications director Hope Hicks.

Rumors of Tillerson's ouster first started late previous year, when reports that appeared to be targeted leaks from the White House emerged that Trump was souring on his secretary of state, following policy disputes and embarrassing leaks.

If confirmed, Haspel would be the CIA's first female director. The Post's Gearan, Philip Rucker and Ashley Parker reported on October 4 that "the already tense relationship between the two headstrong men - one a billionaire former real estate developer, the other a former captain of the global oil industry - has ruptured into what some White House officials call an irreparable breach that will inevitably lead to Tillerson's departure, whether immediately or not". Tillerson also told reporters that the attack would "certainly trigger a response".
