Syria: UN approves 30-day ceasefire

Syria: UN approves 30-day ceasefire

The United Nations Security Council on Saturday unanimously backed a 30-day ceasefire in Syria, allowing for evacuation and emergency aid in the areas hardest hit in bombing raids by government forces.

The Security Council approved a resolution demanding a 30-day truce to allow aid deliveries and medical evacuations with the support of Syrian ally Russian Federation after a flurry of last-minute negotiations.

U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley, who did not participate in the cease-fire negotiations, condemned Russian Federation on Friday for "stalling a vote on a ceasefire".

The initial draft, prepared by Kuwait and Sweden, stipulated that the ceasefire must begin 72 hours after the resolution is passed.

Besides the nation-wide ceasefire, the resolution calls for the lifting of all sieges, facilitation of medical evacuations, and permitting convoys of the UN and its partners carrying humanitarian supplies free access.

The Britain-based war monitor said at least 29 civilians were killed in yesterday's strikes, including 17 in the main town of Douma.

The council is expected to vote on a resolution on Saturday.

In another concession to Moscow, the agreement allows the Syrian government to continue military operations against the "Islamic State" and al-Qaida, as well as "individuals, groups, undertakings and entities" associated with the terror groups.

He also lambasted bank managements for failing to do their job, saying inadequate supervision and top management being unaware of what was going on in the bank was worrisome.

"In this dark moment I urge Catholics in England and Wales to pray for the people of Eastern Ghouta and Syria; to encourage our own government to help end the violence; and to support generously those humanitarian agencies that are bravely working to save lives", Bishop Lang said. The delay followed a flurry of last-minute talks after Russian Federation, a veto-holding ally of Syrian President Bashar Assad, proposed new amendments.

The council is considering a resolution calling for a 30-day cease-fire in Syria. "There is no need to dig graves, we will be buried under our houses".

According to the White Helmets, regime attacks have killed 389 people in Eastern Ghouta in the past six days.

"I believe Eastern Ghouta can not wait", Guterres told the U.N. Security Council Feb. 21.

However, the Syrian regime has also used the term "terror group" in reference to both Islamist militias and the rebel factions it is targeting in eastern Ghouta, suggesting the resolution could prove to be a dead letter.

Several previous ceasefire attempts have quickly unravelled during the multi-sided conflict, which has killed hundreds of thousands and forced 11 million people out of their homes.

Syrian state media reported that rebels fired mortar shells on Damascus, Assad's seat of power, killing at least one person and wounding seven.
