Game Night is a lot better than its premise

Game Night opens in theaters on Friday, February 23.

In a film that excels at breaking rules, "Game Night" sticks to only one credo - to crank out nonstop laughs. A strong script and solid directing help elevate the film to the upper echelons of adult comedies, and a near-perfect cast work to generate laughs from even the most mundane of situations. Game Night is the kind of harmless comedy you rarely see these days, as happily entertaining as a good game of Pictionary.

It's only a game, the friends are told. In other words, the action serves the objective of the comedy, not vice versa.

"Game Night" itself is not a long night; it's reasonably snappy.

John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein are two of the most successful comedy scribes working right now: Their Horrible Bosses films (2011 and 2014) and the recent Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) have cumulatively earned more than US$1 billion (S$1.3 billion) at the global box office.

But take a risk with "Game Night" and you won't be sorry that you checked out this fast, amusing twister of a comedy.

Totally deadpan and hilarious, he's a lonely cop who never takes off his uniform and who always suspects he's being excluded from "game night", leaving Max and Annie to weasel their way out of invitations. They're having trouble conceiving because Max's sperm are, according to his doctor, insecure.

McLaren returns to iconic shade of orange for 2018
As it was previous year , the vehicle will be driven by two-time world champion Fernando Alonso and Stoffel Vandoorne . Prior to pre-season testing commencing next week, the McLaren MCL33 will hit the track on Friday for filming.

Of course, Max and Annie think it's all part of the game until they find out that Kyle has pissed off an unnamed Bulgarian (Michael C. Hall) who holds Brooks ransom until Max can meet his demands.

Kyle Chandler: "No one would ever think I did it".

Following Brooks' kidnapping, a supposed Federal Bureau of Investigation agent (Jeffrey Wright) arrives to deliver a series of dossiers with clues about kidnappings in the area, but he, too, is attacked in front of the gang. But wouldn't you know it, actual kidnappers show up and have a knock-down, drag-out fight with Brooks before dragging him away in front of the three couples, who are impressed by the authenticity of the fight and eager to start sleuthing. Brooks has arranged for the group to play an immersive murder-mystery game, where actors would come to their house and "kidnap" one person, then the others compete in deciphering clues to save him.

I was huge on this movie when I first saw the trailers. In Game Night, they may have finally rolled up a low-key but genuinely enjoyable victor. The characters take the story seriously when they need to, so you actually care what happens to them. Others are mildly embarrassing (McAdams slinking around a bar singing along to a Third Eye Blind song is a low point).

Though just when we have had our fair share of fun, the script insists on piling needless twist upon twist.

What's particularly frustrating is that an early, all-too-brief stretch of the film, in which the characters sit around playing Charades, is giddier and more alive than any of the high jinks that follow.

"It doesn't sound that hard, but when you're trying to do that smoothly it's pretty difficult".

We're a really "method" ensemble, and it was a nice way to bond. "Selsun Blue?" Brooks asks Max, sniffing him as he leans in for a hug - but his attempts at screwball patter are shaky. They get married and try to start a family but can not. And, as he did in Ingrid Goes West, Magnussen offsets his Harlequin-novel looks with a scene-stealing streak of weirdness. Or that combative couple who play Trivial Pursuit as though the loser was going to be eaten for dinner? It all sounds like too much, but the outrageousness of it all works.
