Second Tanker Goes Missing in Gulf of Guinea

A Panama-flag merchant ship with 22 Indian crew members has gone missing from Benin coast in West Africa. The MT Marine Express, however, maintains that it has informed the family members of all the 22 missing crew members about the incident. As per the reports, the ship's owners have announced that the tanker loaded with around 13,500 tonnes of gas oil went missing.

The India mission in Nigeria was in touch with the authorities concerned and the situation was being constantly monitored, the MEA said.

"We regret that contact has been lost with the AE-managed MT Marine Express while at Cotonou, Benin".

"Authorities have been alerted and are responding", the company said in a statement.

The only surprise was that it took them 19 minutes to take the lead through the unlikely figure of Fernandinho. "It was good. Aguero added the third in the 89th minute, chipping a shot over Foster, from sTerling's through ball.

This is the second time in the last one month that a ship has gone missing.

The crew is entirely Indian, with seamen provided by M/s Anglo Eastern Ship Management in Andheri East, which also runs maritime training centres in various places across the country. They are now conducting search operations. Given that pirates had hijacked a British vessel on January 9 and held the crew hostage, another hijack is not ruled out. Reports mention there is a "high possibility' that the ship has been hijacked by pirates off West Africa".

As of 0330 hours GMT on Thursday, when she was last in touch, the Express was at an anchorage off the port of Cotonou in the Gulf of Guinea, an area known for a high risk of piracy.

Anxious relatives of crew members have sought the help of Ministry of Shipping which later said they were in touch with their counterparts in Nigeria and other African counties to help locate the ship.
