Shopian firing incident: Lt. Gen. Anbu says army responds only when provoked

Protesters throw stones on security forces during protest against the alleged killing of two youth in Army firing in Shopian district of South Kashmir, in Srinagar on Sunday. Sources in the Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) here said 19-year-old Rayees Ahmad admitted to the hospital on Saturday succumbed on Wednesday morning.With this, the death toll in Ganowpora village firing rose to three.

An FIR has been lodged by the police in the firing incident mentioning the Army's 10 Garwal Unit and its Major, identified as Aditya.

The army said in its FIR that: "Soldiers were forced to open fire in "self-defence" and in the face of "ultimate provocation" after seven of its personnel were injured".

Questioning the claim that Army resorted to unprovoked firing, he said several personnel were injured besides a number of vehicles were also damaged in the stone-pelting by the mob.

The murder charges have been slapped on the Indian army by the Jammu and Kashmir administration that has come under enormous fire for not being able to stop civilian casualties in encounters between the security forces and insurgent groups seeking freedom of Kashmir from India.

Ignoring the demand of her alliance members, Mehbooba Mufti said that the FIR lodged into the "unfortunate" Shopian killings would be taken to its logical end.

The police have registered an FIR against the soldiers of the unit, charging them with murder.

The separatist leaders have said they would offer Friday congregational prayers at Jamia Masjid Shopian on February 2 and later stage a sit-in at Shopian town against civilian killings in army firing.

BJP's RS Pathania questioned the need to register an FIR in the name of some individuals for such serious offences at such an early stage. SP Vaid, J&K DGP, said that the Army's version would also be considered during the probe.

"Security forces fired bullets on the chests and heads of the victims".
