White House refutes claims it wants to build its own 5G network

However, the USA legislators have raised concerns that with the Chinese telecom firms increasing their market share across Europe and Latin America, the country's initiative to speed up the 5G network growth will require cooperation from telecom firms outside the Chinese dominance.

Even if Trump officials are considering moving forward with the plan, they would likely face strong resistance from other arms of the government.

According to Axios.com, a memo and PowerPoint presentation crafted by an unnamed senior official of the National Security Council urges the Trump administration to take "extraordinary efforts to counter the growing economic and political threat from China's aggressive efforts to develop 5G". Additionally, the mobile industry would probably raise quite an outcry over the next six to eight months about how such a centralized network would be funded and built.

An alternative plan where wireless providers build their own 5G networks that compete with one another - though the document says the downside is it could take longer and cost more. Yes, the USA government is considering going all socialist and nationalising the emerging 5G industry. 5G network nationalization is no where a reality at the moment, but would require a stern approach to block out private national carriers from interfering during the process.

USTelecom President and CEO Jonathan Spalter spoke for many within the wireless industry when he said in a statement that "there is nothing that would slam the [brakes] more quickly on our hard-won momentum to be the leader in the global race for 5G network deployment more quickly than the federal government stepping-in to build those networks".

The Axios report calls the first option "an unprecedented nationalisation of a historically private infrastructure". Apparently, "China has achieved a dominant position in the manufacture and operation of network infrastructure", and "China is the dominant malicious actor in the Information Domain".

The United States is looking to beat out China and other world powers in deploying a sustainable and viable national 5G network.

Both AT&T and Verizon plan to begin limited rollouts of their 5G networks before the end of 2018, and Height said it's unlikely the government could beat the companies to the punch. Another source said that a new draft was in the works for the memo and that the newer version is more neutral about whether the USA government should build and own this 5G network.

If you wanted to get President Trump to sign off on partially nationalizing a massive US industry, citing the threat from China isn't a bad way to go about it.

Reporters from Axios got their hands on the presentation and published the details Sunday evening. All in all, it would seem that the idea to create a government-run 5G network is dead in the water, at least for now.

An AT&T spokesman said they could not comment on something they have not seen, and added, "Thanks to multi-billion dollar investments made by American companies, the work to launch 5G service in the United States is already well down the road".
