Weekend box office: Maze Runner: Death Cure takes down Jumanji

This week, the Cinemaholics are back to review Maze Runner: The Death Cure, the third and final installment of the YA franchise starring Dylan O'Brien, Kaya Scodelario, Giancarlo Esposito, Patricia Clarkson, Ki Hong Lee, Aidan Gillen and many others.

A sequel to a sequel, "Maze Runner: The Death Cure", with its zombie plague and revenge-determined teenagers, arrived to about $23.5 million in ticket sales domestically, dethroning Sony's "Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle" as the No. 1 attraction at multiplexes.

Maze Runner: The Death Cure pushed Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle out of first place, a position it's held for three weeks. It's the third and final installment in the "Maze Runner" series based on James Dashner's dystopian young adult novels and the weakest opening of the three (the first opened to $32.5 million and the second to $30.3 million). This weekend it added almost 70 markets and brought in an estimated $62.7 million pushing its worldwide cume to $105.5 million. The bigger surprise is the overperformance of Christian Bale's HOSTILES, which will finish in third place with close to $10 million, which is a strong number for a Western.

Thunder's Roberson carted off with leg injury
The 26-year-old shooting guard missed eight games earlier in the season due to patellar tendinitis in his left knee. Roberson, who was in the right corner, broke to the basket as Russell Westbrook lobbed the ball to him.

"Greatest Showman", which finished in the top five for the sixth straight weekend, continues to build on its strong audience word of mouth despite lukewarm critical reception with $9.6 million for a $126.6 million domestic total. "Jumanji" now has a running total of $337 million after a $15.8 million weekend. It gets a wide release this week after it was only shown at limited theaters back in December 2017.

Rounding out the Fox portfolio was the animated "Ferdinand", which collected about $1 million, for a new total of $80.5 million. Three dramas with varied production budgets, each nominated for best picture at the coming Oscars - "The Post", "The Shape of Water" and "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri" - took in an additional $18.2 million for Fox and its specialty label, Fox Searchlight. "These are films that would usually be played out", said Dergarabedian. "If anyone is on the fence, a best picture nomination is a pretty good way to push people in the direction of the movie theater".
