United Nations envoy calls for viable political settlement to Syrian crisis

Minister of Foreign and Expatriates Affairs, Ayman Safadi, on Sunday, received U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees' (UNHCR) Special Envoy, Angelina Jolie, who concluded a one-day visit to the Kingdom, during which she visited the northeastern Al-Zaatari Syrian refugee camp.

Jolie told the refugees she was very proud of them and that "you're very strong, all of you".

Almost 5.5 million displaced Syrians are hosted by Jordan, Lebanon and other neighboring countries.

Accompanied by the UNHCR Representative in Jordan Stefano Severe, the Hollywood actress called on UN Security Council members to visit the refugee camps and see first hand the plight of the refugees after seven years of displacement.

Doss Jr., 25, who was shot in the head while responding to a domestic incident Wednesday night, died about 12:45 p.m. Officers encountered the man outside the home when he opened fire.

Jolie praised the hospitality of the host countries and hailed it "an example to the world at a time when solidarity with refugees is in short supply". Zahara, 13, and Shiloh, 11, reportedly met with a group of young Syrian girls at a UNHCR-funded community center in the camp. "Imagine what that would mean for your family", Jolie said.

"We know that the fundamental issue is not that people don't know, ' she explained, 'but the lack of a credible political and diplomatic process based in human rights and global law to bring the violence to an end". 'For them it is so destroying to be made so dependent, ' she said.

"What is important is that the people here are not being forced and that they are continuing to get care and that there is more new school programs and sanitation", she said. 'Peace in that country has to be build on that'. Jolie says the United Nations refugee agency only received half its funding appeal last year, and only seven percent of this year's request.

"But above all please provide the leadership and strength needed to negotiate a principled end to this senseless war, without sacrificing the dignity and human rights of Syrian families".
