US making plans for 'bloody nose' military attack on North Korea

Baik Tae-hyun, spokesman of South Korea's Unification Ministry, which deals with matters related to North Korea, said Monday that the Seoul government was examining whether the North was behind hacking attacks on a cryptocurrency exchange in June.

Among them is a United States accusation that it hacked Sony Pictures Entertainment over The Interview, a satirical movie about a plot to assassinate North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

The White House officially accuses North Korea of being the mastermind behind the WannaCry cyber-attack, Donald Trump's internal security adviser Tom Bossert said in a New York Times editorial.

A defence ministry official said up to 20 warning shots were fired at North Korean troops who approached too closely to the "military demarcation line".

"After a careful investigation, the USA publicly assigns the massive WannaCry cyber-attack to North Korea", Trump's adviser announced.

Bossert said Tuesday in a press briefing the attribution of the ransomware, dubbed WannaCry, to the East Asian country is based on "careful investigation" in collaboration with private companies and other worldwide governments such as the U.K., Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Japan. "We do so with evidence, and we do so with partners".

Bossert said the USA administration's finding of responsibility is based on evidence and confirmed by other governments and private companies, including the United Kingdom and Microsoft. "At this point, some of the benefit that come from this attribution is letting them know that we're going to move to stop their behaviour", he said. "They shut down accounts the North Korean regime hackers used to launch attacks and patched systems", he said.

"We condemn these actions and commit ourselves to working with all responsible states to combat destructive criminal use of cyberspace". Some companies reported massive losses, including FedEx which said they had incurred losses in the hundreds of millions of dollars.
